Edge of Ruin: What Happened

Edge of Ruin

In a world left decimated by the event known as the "Ruin", survivors and mutated races struggle for life. They fight not only against creatures changed by the Ruin, but the darker side of human nature itself, each other.

According to history passed down through generations, the catastrophic event took place approximately a hundred or so years ago. There was a terrorist attack in Europe, with bio-chemicals generously used. The initial attack was small, innocuous, overlooked easily in the more obvious, physical damage caused by the blast of a small bomb. It took hours for the chemicals to show any effect, and by that point, the infected had already come into contact with countless others.

The first symptoms were misdiagnosed, the common denominator not even sought after until they had twenty reports across the city. The infected had hot and cold flashes, then trouble with motor skills. They slurred their words, stumbled, and dropped things they attempted to hold in their hands. This was followed by convulsions and nausea, loss of bladder control and incoherent ramblings that varied from randomly yelling at the top of their lungs, to a barely audible whisper. Organs began to fail and shut down by the time the media were allowed to broadcast the story. Then they died.

By the time the quarantine came, 48 hours had passed. The toxin was airborne, designed to attack the brain and shut down the vital organs of the body. The now deceased victims of the initial attack had at least 18 hours before their symptoms drove them to the emergency room. Plenty of time to mingle with the general public, spreading the toxin with every breath they took. And those people mingled with others, and those others came into contact with more still. The cycle proved to be truly devastating.

It was far too late when they shut down all traffic out of Europe. The virus had escaped, nestled warmly in the bodies of unsuspecting hosts. The governments attempted inoculation, hoping to boost the body?s immune system, to give them more of a fighting chance until they could figure out a cure. It only mutated the virus, changed it into several different strains and still the contagion spread across the globe. The fortunate victims were the ones that died, and stayed dead.

The others died, but they came back. The zombies spread at a slower rate than the virus, but were just as deadly, feasting like animals upon any survivors that crossed their paths. Animals weren?t immune to the mutated effects, either. Their forms grew twisted as madness seeped into their brains. The death continued to spread at a rate that could not be controlled, could not be contained. Exposure seemed inevitable.

The government and ruling bodies of various countries quickly ferreted out those that had zero exposure and sequestered them away in bunkers and shelters. They gave priority to military personnel, government and their families. Then they sought out doctors, scientists, engineers, and more. This was now a world killer, and they needed to retain what skills they could if there was to be any hope of the human race surviving.

Bunkers were sealed, shelters were locked shut, and prayers were briefly said for those that remained outside, then they prayed for themselves. There was no guarantee that they would survive, however they had a huge step in the right direction. Certain agencies had been preparing for a world killer for some time, and most of the bunkers had stockpiles of food, water, generator created electricity and more. They had planned to be there for a long haul, and they were not wrong.

The year is now 100 AR (After Ruin), long past the time when privately owned shelters ran out of food and supplies. Smaller bunkers lasted a little longer. Medium to the larger sized bunkers came above ground fairly recently, and the largest of them, the government owned bunkers, are just now cracking the seal and opening the doors. What advances they might have made underground are of little use in the harsh world that waited for them.

Those that were alive in the event have long since passed away, their story and history passed down through the generations that followed. Like some childhood phone game, details have been slightly warped and twisted. The government bunkers faithfully made logs, writing down all that they knew and archiving it for the day they would start to live in the world above ground. Skills were taught to the children of the various professionals that were saved from the outbreak. They did the best they could, with the resources they had on hand, but the full extent has been lost along the way.

Somewhere there may still be journals and books, detailing skills that were forgotten about, or not seen as important at the time. Most cities still exist, cars abandoned in the streets, homes with all the belongings still inside. They are decayed by time itself, and in some areas, by the mutated races and creatures as they sought out their own homes. It is extremely dangerous to attempt to seek out this old knowledge, but some bunkers have plans to try and recover what they can, and use the bunker as the archive for it all.

Marriage no longer exists. Women are precious commodities, especially those of child bearing age. Those that cannot have children are the nannies and caretakers of the children. Those that can, have children. The human race suffered an incredible blow, and it must be rebuilt. They record the births and lineage to prevent inbreeding down the road. Women are paired with men that are seen as leaders, strong and with desirable genetics for the next generation. Some groups and bunkers have worked hard to maintain some semblance of equality, but most have not. In dark times, human nature takes a dark turn.

In those groups, women who cannot have children may be seen as having 'recreational' worth only, or become little more than goods to be traded and sold. Otherwise, they will endure the touch of various men until they conceive. Many females try to become pregnant, because then they have a reprieve from the unwanted attention, are fed first, and receive the best care during this time. Some groups allow three months between birth and the next pregnancy, some do not. Those with the most strength and power rule, and often with a heavy hand and little mercy for those weaker.

Those with actual skills are nearly as precious as women. Those with medical skills are fought over, engineers are quickly claimed and put to work bettering the group's encampment. Small skirmishes and wars between the emerged groups have occurred over these skilled individuals. It's barely better than the blood shed over child bearing women. Brothers have killed the other to have another woman in their fold.

Resources across the world are difficult to find, much less harvest. Nature has attempted to reclaim the land, and in many cases, succeeded in doing so. Water is boiled as much as possible, unsure how safe anything above ground actually is. Groups find it difficult to tell until someone gets sick and dies from it, then they may leave a marker to indicate the danger to others. There are also hotspots that must be avoided. Pockets of the world where the chemical seems to just linger, waiting for the unsuspecting to kill or infect in new, mutated ways.

The world has become quite harsh, and those just now emerging are about to find out the first step is a doozy.
