The Sun Just Shot Off the Biggest, Most Spectacular Solar Flare of the Year

Early this morning, while most of us were resting peacefully in our beds, everyone's favorite flaming ball of plasma decided to give NASA's cameras a little show. More specifically, the Solar Dynamics Observatory managed to capture our sun's biggest solar flare of the year thus far. More »

Lights, chemistry, action: New method for mapping brain activity

Apr. 10, 2013 ? Building on their history of innovative brain-imaging techniques, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and collaborators have developed a new way to use light and chemistry to map brain activity in fully-awake, moving animals. The technique employs light-activated proteins to stimulate particular brain cells and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to trace the effects of that site-specific stimulation throughout the entire brain. As described in a paper published online today in the Journal of Neuroscience, the method will allow researchers to map exactly which downstream neurological pathways are activated or deactivated by stimulation of targeted brain regions, and how that brain activity correlates with particular behaviors and/or disease conditions.

"This technique gives us a new way to look at the function of specific brain cells and map which brain circuits are active in a wide range of neuropsychiatric diseases -- from depression to Parkinson's disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and drug addiction -- and also to monitor the effects of various treatments," said the paper's lead author, Panayotis (Peter) Thanos, a neuroscientist and director of the Behavioral Neuropharmacology and Neuroimaging Section -- part of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Laboratory of Neuroimaging at Brookhaven Lab -- and a professor at Stony Brook University. "Because the animals are awake and able to move during stimulation, we can also directly study how their behavior correlates with brain activity," he said.

The new brain-mapping method combines very recent advances in a field known as "optogenetics" -- the use of optics (light activation) and genetics (genetically coded light-sensitive proteins) to control the activity of individual neurons, or nerve cells -- and Brookhaven's historical development of radioactively labeled chemical tracers to track biological activity with PET scanners.

The scientists used a modified virus to deliver a light-sensitive protein to particular brain cells in rats. Genetic coding can deliver the protein to specifically targeted brain-cell receptors. Then, after stimulating those proteins with light shone through an optical fiber inserted through a tiny tube called a cannula, they monitored overall brain activity using a radiotracer known as ^18FDG, which serves as a stand-in for glucose, the body's (and brain's) main source of energy.

The unique chemistry of ^18FDG causes it to be temporarily "trapped" inside cells that are hungry for glucose -- those activated by the brain stimulation -- and remain there long enough for the detectors of a PET scanner to pick up the radioactive signal, even after the animals are anesthetized to ensure they stay still for scanning. But because the animals were awake and moving when the tracer was injected and the brain cells were being stimulated, the scans reveal what parts of the brain were activated (or deactivated) under those conditions, giving scientists important information about how those brain circuits function and correlate with the animals' behaviors.

"In this paper, we wanted to stimulate the nucleus accumbens, a key part of the brain involved in reward that is very important to understanding drug addiction," Thanos said. "We wanted to activate the cells in that area and see which brain circuits were activated and deactivated in response."

The scientists used the technique to trace activation and deactivation in number of key pathways, and confirmed their results with other analysis techniques. The method can reveal even more precise effects.

"If we want to know more about the role played by specific types of receptors -- say the dopamine D1 or D2 receptors involved in processing reward -- we could tailor the light-sensitive protein probe to specifically stimulate one or the other to tease out those effects," he said.

Another important aspect is that the technique does not require the scientists to identify in advance the regions of the brain they want to investigate, but instead provides candidate brain regions involved anywhere in the brain -- even regions not well understood.

"We look at the whole brain," Thanos said. "We take the PET images and co-register them with anatomical maps produced with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and use statistical techniques to do comparisons voxel by voxel. That allows us to identify which areas are more or less activated under the conditions we are exploring without any prior bias about what regions should be showing effects."

After they see a statistically significant effect, they use the MRI maps to identify the locations of those particular voxels to see what brain regions they are in.

"This opens it up to seeing an effect in any region in the brain -- even parts where you would not expect or think to look -- which could be a key to new discoveries," he said.

Barnes & Noble relabels PubIt! as Nook Press, adds web-based publishing tool

Barnes & Noble relabels PubIt! as Nook Press, adds webbased publishing and Nook HD channel

Barnes & Noble's PubIt! self-publishing conduit has been active for well over two years, but you'd be forgiven for overlooking it with that somewhat forgettable (if very emphatic) name. The company might just know what you're thinking, as it's giving the service a considerably more memorable title, Nook Press, while upgrading features at the same time. Although the royalty structure remains the same, Nook Press now incorporates a web-based authoring tool: would-be Hemingways can write and preview their work through one online hub, sharing their drafts with others in a secure space. Those who commit should also get more exposure through an upcoming Nook Press channel on Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets. There's no guarantee that the rebranding will lure potential bestselling authors away from Amazon, but they may have a better sense of their options.

92% Room 237

All Critics (91) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (85) | Rotten (7) | DVD (1)

Their imaginings are not far removed from the deconstuctionist gobbledygook that has hammerlocked academic film and literary scholarship. But here at least the gobbledygook is entertaining.

[It] may be the surpassingly eccentric-and enormously entertaining-film that Kubrick deserves.

"Room 237" is an act of uncommon devotion to cinema, embracing the notion that movies are best defined by what happens to us as we watch them - how our own beliefs and experiences dictate our interpretation of what we've seen and heard.

This is sure to amuse you if you get a bang out of the claims that Paul McCartney died in 1966 and Dark Side of the Moon was intended as a soundtrack for The Wizard of Oz.

I found most of what's actually put forth in the film interpretively ridiculous. But I'm just one theorist among millions, and the film worked for me anyway.

Listening to fanatics go on and on about their fixations can be kind of fun. For a while, at least.

Confounding, eye-opening, and often hilarious.

I suspect that Ascher's intention was to dynamize an academic exercise, but these constant, sundry inserts render the tone as corny and glib as a VH1 special.

The thrill's in the thinking about little pieces of cinematic language as words contributing to a two-hour essay.

Would it be hypocritical to say that I loved "Room 237," even thought I felt like 75 percent of what was said in it was completely hooey?

a journey down a rabbit hole worth taking, as the film immerses us in alternately fascinating, compelling, absurd, and frightening theories about what, exactly, The Shining is (or might be) about

Room 237 is both an ode to the subversive nature of the movies and a fascinating insight into clashing obsessions in its most lurid form, even when its stylistic choices seek to destroy the experience.

I can't buy into the notion of Stanley Kubrick faking Apollo 11's moon landing but he definitely helped Shelley Duvall fake a movie career.

"Anything you say, Lloyd. Anything you say."

"Room 237" is movie so chunky and sweet you can eat it with a spoon.

This documentary will entertain everyone from film junkies to conspiracy theorists and those who like to debunk them as Ascher spreads his net to include everything from the most provocative ideas to blatant bunkum.

This geek gossip is made even more captivating by the fact that nobody will likely ever know whether any of it is true.

Hilarious, bizarre and provocative. You'll never look at The Shining the same way again

The beauty of Room 237, however, doesn't lie in the validity of any one of the commentators' thoughtful (and occasionally well-informed) speculations, but instead in that mysterious grey zone between an artist's intentions and audience interpretation.

More pain for Portugal? High court ruling threatens 2013 budget, recovery

Portugal's Constitutional Court ruled Friday that a fifth of the government's planned budget cuts were unconstitutional, in part because they were discriminatory and retroactive.

By Andr?s Cala,?Correspondent / April 8, 2013

Portugal's Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho (c.) gestures during a debate in the Portuguese parliament in Lisbon on Friday. Portugal's Constitutional Court ruled on Friday that some of the unpopular pay cuts in this year's state budget are unlawful, threatening the country's economic recovery.

In another serious challenge to Europe?s economic recovery, the Portuguese government said late Sunday that it will further cut spending in education, healthcare, social security, and state companies to offset austerity measures that the highest court ruled unconstitutional late on Friday.

The Constitutional Court overturned salary and pension cuts targeting public employees that are equal to around 20 percent of the more than 5 billion euros ($6.5 billion) approved as part of the 2013 budget. The court ruled that the measures were discriminatory in part because they only affected part of the labor force, and were retroactive to Jan. 1, 2013.

?Nobody can deny the decision of the Constitutional Tribunal has serious consequences for the entire country,? said Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho in an address to the country. The government won?t implement more tax hikes, but it committed itself to meeting the terms imposed by the troika: the European Union, The European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.

Inevitably, Mr. Passos Coelho said, social services will have to be cut ?to compensate? for the court-mandated revisions to the 2013 budget. He didn?t say what specifically would be trimmed.

While the court decision and resulting budget cuts present political risks in the middle and long term, its effects are more immediately economic. Portugal may now need a second extension of its 2013 deficit target to be able to reach it, and may even require a second bailout ? potentially upending the country's economic progress and delaying the European recovery.

Either way, the economic scrambling will undermine the country?s efforts to once again gain access to credit markets.

A new deal with the troika?

Passos Coelho harshly criticized the court ruling and said it will compound the pain Portugal is already feeling from public cuts of more than 13 billion euros ($17 billion) in the last two years.

The ruling also comes only days before Portugal asks its troika creditors for more flexible terms in talks planned for this weekend. In March, it received a two-year extension, until 2015, to the 78 billion euro bailout package ($101 billion)?negotiated in 2011 to meet the European deficit target of 3 percent of the gross domestic product.

The new 2013 target agreed to in March was 5.5 percent, from 6.4 percent in 2012, but the court ruling could derail that. Portugal will face ?serious difficulty? to meet its international financial commitments and its budget targets, the government said after a Sunday cabinet meeting in response to the ruling.

The troika has suggested it is open to talks with Portugal, despite persistent delays to the country meeting its goals, no doubt to avoid opening yet another flank in the troika's ongoing efforts to control the economic crisis. But depending on the political and economic evolution, Portugal could be forced to ask for more money.

?We need to do everything to avoid a second bailout,? said Passos Coelho. But that will depend on his troika creditors and also how markets react to yet another obstacle to the country?s economic recovery.

Despite controversially threatening to resign if the court found the budget unconstitutional, it remains unlikely that Passos Coelho will do so imminently. His party holds a comfortable majority in parliament and enjoys strong institutional support after surviving several no-confidence votes, including one last week.

Disinfection intervention highlights effective method in removing antibiotic-resistant bug

With rates and deaths associated with Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) at historically high levels, many hospitals have taken extra steps to reduce these infections. New research finds that a dedicated daily cleaning crew who adequately clean and disinfect rooms contaminated by C. difficile using a standardized process can be more effective than other disinfection interventions. The study is published in the May issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), in a special topic issue focused on the role of the environment in infection prevention.

C. difficile is a highly contagious, antibiotic-resistant intestinal germ that causes inflammation of the colon, known as colitis. Any surface, (e.g., toilets, bathing tubs, and electronic rectal thermometers) can become contaminated with C. difficile spores. Spores can also be transferred to patients via the hands of healthcare professionals who have touched a contaminated surface or item.

During a 21-month period, researchers conducted a prospective intervention study at the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center through three intervention sequences including: 1) the use of fluorescent markers applied to high-touch surfaces in patient rooms to provide monitoring and feedback on thoroughness of cleaning; 2) utilization of an automated ultraviolet (UV) radiation device as a complementary disinfection strategy used after cleaning; and 3) an enhanced disinfection process composed of a dedicated daily disinfection team and a process requiring supervisory assessment and clearance of terminally-cleaned C. difficile infected rooms. Each strategy built on the previous one.

To determine the effectiveness of the interventions, cultures were obtained from rooms contaminated with C. difficile after cleaning and disinfection. The fluorescent marker intervention modestly improved the disinfection of high-touch surfaces over traditional cleaning practices (57 percent versus 67 percent). The use of the UV device further reduced the percentage of positive cultures, but C. difficile still was present in 35 percent of rooms. Ultimately, disinfection was dramatically improved with the addition of enhanced standard disinfection intervention, reducing positive cultures to 7 percent.

"Healthcare facilities are increasingly turning to automated room disinfection devices as a strategy to optimize environmental disinfection. With effective monitoring and feedback, motivated environmental services personnel can achieve results that rival or surpass many of the automated devices," said Curtis Donskey, MD, staff physician at Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affair Medical Center and an author of the study.

The enhanced standard disinfection intervention included formation of a dedicated C. difficile disinfection team that used bleach wipes to disinfect high-touch surfaces. Establishing a dedicated team of highly-motivated housekeepers eliminated the problem of variability in housekeeper performance. Supervisory housekeeping staff and/or infection control personnel cleared C. difficile rooms granting an opportunity to directly observe individual housekeeper performance and provide immediate feedback. Notably, although use of the UV device was continued in the third intervention, it did not contribute to the effectiveness of the intervention (i.e., all negative cultures were negative both before and after operation of the UV device).

While the study highlights the potential for environmental services personnel to achieve excellent disinfection of C. difficile rooms, it does have several limitations. Researchers have not yet demonstrated if this intervention could be maintained long-term or if it would be effective in reducing C. difficile transmission and infections. Additionally, environmental cultures for C. difficile were crucial to the success of the intervention, but are currently not feasible for most healthcare facilities.

It's Official: Brooklyn Real Estate Is Back

grand-avenue-brownstones-0612This just in from a?press release from the?Real Estate Board of New York: New York real estate is back from the dead. ?The luxury market continues to show strength but a broader look at various market segments shows that the residential real estate market has recovered,? said?REBNY president?Steven Spinola. The evidence???The number of sales of all homes (cooperatives, condominiums, and one-to-three-family dwellings) citywide climbed 11 percent from the first quarter of last year, and four percent from the previous quarter, to 10,012 sales,? said the release. ?Median sales prices in the first quarter of 2013 climbed seven percent from the first quarter of last year to $480,000, the highest median sales price for all homes in the city since 2008.? More specifically, in Brooklyn, sales for the first quarter of this year totalled?$1.6 billion, a 21 percent increase over the first quarter of 2011. ?The biggest number of sales occurred in?Park Slope, Bed Stuy, Gravesend, Kensington and Bay Ridge, in that order.?But, cautioned REBNY, inventory of new developments in Williamsburg is low (until all the new builds finish up, that is!) ?There were 73 condominium sales in Williamsburg during the first quarter of 2013, a post-recession low for the Brooklyn neighborhood,? said the report. ?This is a 52 percent decrease from the first quarter of last year due to a lack of new inventory. The last time there were fewer condo sales in the first quarter in Williamsburg was in 2009, immediately after the financial crisis.?

US Army Signs Onto 20 MW Solar Farm, Biggest in Military

The Army base in?Fort Bliss, Texas has?a goal of getting to net-zero energy, and as part of that, they are about to build a 20 megawatt solar farm,?the biggest for the military to date.

It will power?all?the division headquarters and most of the eastern sector of the sprawling complex, and is the first partnership between the military and?a?major local utility on a renewable energy project of this scale.

El Paso Electric is building the plant, which will come online in 2015. They are also planning another 20 MW solar plant and pursuing wind and geothermal projects.

Fort Bliss already has a 1.4 MW solar?solar array, the Army's second-largest, and?13.4 MW of solar PV on?post rooftops, maintained by SolarCity as part of Project SolarStrong.?

Army Fort Bliss Solar

Other measures toward net-zero energy are making life better at the Army base - they've?planted 14,700 trees and created biking and walking paths that wind through the complex.

The Army's goal is for renewables to supply 25% of energy?by 2015.

In 2011,?the US?Army announced that?six bases would target?net- zero energy, another six?net-zero water and another six net-zero waste.

Fort Bliss was one of several basis that chose to target all three ...?by 2020.

Recycling has also gotten a lot more attention on base, raising $1 million last year for projects such as?skating parks and spinning bicycles. There's?also been a dramatic drop in electricity use in post housing, says Major General?Dana?Pittard.

"Changing behavior and promoting a culture that encourages energy conservation are keys to achieving Net Zero,"?he explains.?"And that is what we hope our soldiers will then take with them when they go on to other installations and move into society throughout the county."

"The solar farm, along with our environment campaign plan, are both part of a larger effort to make Fort Bliss the most fit, most healthy, most resilient community in America that is environmentally sound and is best at preparing soldiers and units for combat," he says.

Soldiers feel much more part of a community when they get outdoors.?It's "no accident" that Fort Bliss has the Army's lowest suicide rate in the US, he says.

"We feel that the fitness, the resiliency and the Net Zero is interrelated," Pittard says. "For us here, it has been a no-brainer. Now what we hope is that the rest of the Army sees that and will replicate it."

SSO backs plan for standard cancer care - The Nation

THE NATION April 9, 2013 1:00 am

SSO deputy chief Supatcharee Meekrut said at a meeting last week the 10-million-subscriber fund was ready to implement the move.

SSO official Dr Sonthaya Preunglamphu said subscribers' cancer prevalence was about 300 per 100,000 people. So, the SSO's cancer treatment expenses were rising - cancer treatment fees collected by hospitals from the SSO rose from Bt1.2 billion in 2008 to Bt1.7 billion in 2011. The cost per cancer patient was Bt50,000, which was close to the NHSO's rate of Bt52,500. Therefore, the SSO agreed to use the same protocol as the NHSO in regard to cancer treatment, he said.

The SSO might also adjust its compensation rate to be the same as the NHSO's.

Sonthaya suggested guidelines for doctors about using medicines outside the National List of Essential Medicines should be clearly set and apply to all three funds, and scrutiny of expensive drug usage and negotiations on drug prices should also be clarified.

NHSO chief Dr Winai Sawasdivorn said Thailand saw a 5-7 per cent increase in cancer patients a year, with 2.5 million of them alive as of last year. The most sought-after treatments were for breast cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer, respectively.

So far, the NHSO and SSO agree in principle to integrate treatment systems in six aspects, he said. They were PR, disease prevention promotion, screening, compensation paid for bills, palliative care for patients, and to make a database of patients.

Lebanon's new premier says election delay likely

By Dominic Evans and Laila Bassam

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's June election faces a possible delay, prime minister-designate Tammam Salam said, as he prepared to form a government which aims to resolve months of dispute over the vote and shield the country from war in neighboring Syria.

Salam, a moderate who won broad political support to become premier, said he would try to bring all of Lebanon's rival factions into a government whose main priority was paving the way for the parliamentary election.

But with most political blocs opposed to the existing electoral law - including the powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah movement and its Saudi- and Western-backed March 14 opponents - Salam said reaching agreement on a new system would take time.

"There is a possibility of a technical delay while a new electoral law is decided," Salam told Reuters in his Ottoman-style mansion in Beirut on Sunday, a day after President Michel Suleiman asked him to form a new government.

The alternative of extending the existing parliament's life by a year or two was constitutionally risky, said Salam, while the worst-case scenario of a political "vacuum" would be a step towards the catastrophic conflict underway in Syria and suffered by Lebanon in its own 1975-1990 civil war.

"We experimented with this in the past when politics turned into political battles outside the democratic institutions and we paid a very heavy price, as others are paying today," the 67-year-old former culture minister said.

Salam, from a prominent Sunni Muslim family, is close to the March 14 coalition of former prime minister Saad al-Hariri - despite tensions between the two political dynasties in previous elections - but his nomination also won the backing of the rival March 8 bloc which includes Hezbollah and its allies.

March 14 groups mainly Sunni and Christian parties which pushed, with U.S. and European support, for Syria to end nearly three decades of military presence in Lebanon in 2005.

Political tensions have risen sharply since the outbreak in 2011 of the Syrian uprising, which March 14 strongly supports while March 8 has backed President Bashar al-Assad. But the rival camps bridged their differences, perhaps briefly, to give Salam the backing of 124 out of parliament's 128 members.

Asked if he would try to form a government representing all of Lebanon's political factions, including Shi'ite Hezbollah, Salam said: "As long as everyone took part in (my) nomination, everyone should be involved in forming the government too."

SYRIAN DANGERS

Salam's elevation follows the resignation last month of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose two years in office were marked by efforts to contain sectarian rifts, street battles and economic fallout from the Syrian civil war.

Mikati tried to maintain a policy of "dissociation" from Syria's turmoil, knowing that any clear stance on the conflict would antagonize some among Lebanon's factions.

But he sometimes found himself at odds with own foreign minister, who vocally criticized the Arab League for suspending Syria and appeared reluctant to convey government protests over Syrian army cross-border shelling or air strikes.

Dissociation "was a good title, but it was not properly implemented and it witnessed some downfalls now and then", Salam said, adding that Lebanon needed to stand up more clearly for its sovereignty and promising to tighten border security.

That step would also aim to prevent fighters from Lebanon - both supporters of the rebels and of Assad - from crossing the border to join the fight, he said.

A Sunni Muslim, as all prime ministers must be under Lebanon's confessional distribution of power - Salam studied business administration in Britain after school in Beirut.

His guiding philosophy, he said, was "moderation, in a country which has been governed by moderation for many, many years, and has suffered from extremism in other times".

Salam's mother Tamima, now in her 90s, is from a prominent Damascus family while his later father Saeb served six times as Lebanese prime minister between 1952 and 1973. A black and white portrait of the elder Salam, a white rose in his suit lapel, looked down on his son as he spoke during the interview.

His grandfather was a parliamentary deputy in the last years of the Ottoman empire and campaigned against French colonial authorities who ruled Lebanon until independence in 1943.

"Historically we have lived in Lebanon in a very precarious situation ... affected by Arab and regional and international developments, and also internally by the different religious factions that form the country," he said.

"(Now) there is a minimum of stability in the country, a minimum of law and order. But it is still enough to preserve Lebanon and (for us) to exercise our democratic functions."

China Mine Accident: Trapped Miners Rescued After Almost 60 Hours Underground

BEIJING ? Three miners in China have been rescued after spending two and a half days trapped underground because of flooding in a coal mine that killed three of their colleagues.

Xinhua News Agency says the three were lifted to safety from the mine in Guizhou province's Weng'an county early Monday. They have been hospitalized in stable condition. Three other miners remain missing.

The mine flooded at around 10 p.m. Friday, trapping nine miners. Rescuers on Sunday had been waiting for the water level to recede before entering the shaft.

Xinhua says police have detained eight people in the ongoing investigation.

China's mines have long been the world's deadliest. Safety improvements have reduced deaths in recent years, but regulations are often ignored and accidents are still common.

Battlefield 4 Pre-Order - Battlefield Series - =ADK= Gaming Community

I pre-ordered mine about a week ago. I believe by pre-ordering it you are part of beta.

I hope they do not make it like 2142. That was one of the only BF games i did not like. I would have to agree they need to bring back some other vehicles, like a two person plan like in BF2, or some normal vehicles throughout a city map. Also like the grappling hook in BF2 would be cool. And definently some new, hopefully larger maps. Maps like stated above like jungle would be cool, or more city types where all building could have access, and maybe add the ability to destroy buildings to the ground.

Graphics look to be much better, and from what i have read the sun glare is better. I cant wait for it, but i am not sure it it will be out when they say. There are new consoles coming out at the end of the year so who knows......

Anyway i cant wait......

Final Four: It's Louisville and The Other Guys

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino speaks to his players during practice for their NCAA Final Four tournament college basketball semifinal game against Wichita State, Friday, April 5, 2013, in Atlanta. Louisville plays Wichita State in a semifinal game on Saturday. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)

(AP) ? Tip-off time is nearing. Time to see if Louisville can live up to the hype or one of those other guys can turn the Final Four into their party.

The Cardinals are not only the favorites to win the national championship, they've become sentimental favorites, as well, after rallying around Kevin Ware, the guard whose compound leg fracture in last week's regional final turned stomachs, while also warming hearts and setting the story line for this week in Atlanta.

"With Kevin going down, especially the way he did, it's just making us play harder," Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear said Friday.

In Saturday's opening national semifinal at the Georgia Dome, the Cardinals ? No. 1 seeds in the entire tournament ? play ninth-seeded Wichita State, which has sprung upsets of Gonzaga and Ohio State en route to that program's first Final Four appearance since 1965.

The second semifinal pits a pair of No. 4 seeds, Michigan and Syracuse, two programs with plenty of tradition but largely considered subplots in a week dominated by Louisville and Ware. (To say nothing of the news going down at Rutgers, where video of coach Mike Rice hitting players led to his ouster, the departure of the athletic director and other problems.)

"I'm just glad to know Kevin Ware now even more because he's probably the most famous person I know," Louisville guard Peyton Siva said. "You know, when you have Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama call you, it's pretty good to say you know that person."

Wichita State has one player (Carl Hall) who salvaged his career after working in a light bulb factory and two more (Ron Baker and Malcolm Armstead) who paid their way to come to school and started on the team as walk-ons. Its coach has invited fans into the locker room after big wins. In most years, this would be the school with all the makings of a team the whole country can get behind.

Problem is, in this case, Louisville and Ware are already tugging on America's heart strings.

"We're brothers for life," swingman Luke Hancock said. "I have that guy's back in any situation. I know he has mine."

Louisville (33-5) is a 10?-point favorite against the Shockers (30-8).

The second semifinal is expected to be more competitive. Michigan (30-7) is a 2-point favorite against Syracuse (30-9). The Wolverines are back at the Final Four for the first time since the Fab Five led them there in 1993. Syracuse returns on the 10-year anniversary of its only title, led by Carmelo Anthony.

The featured players in this game: For Michigan, Trey Burke, The Associated Press Player of the Year. And for Syracuse, well, it's coach Jim Boeheim's 2-3 zone defense.

How will Boeheim try to stop Burke, whose long-range 3-pointer against Kansas sent the game into overtime and set the stage for the Wolverines run to Atlanta?

"I don't pay attention to matchups," Boeheim said. "It's teams. Teams play."

Indeed, during interviews Friday, the Syracuse players sounded plenty confident that their team could stop Burke and the rest of the Wolverines, who followed their victory over top-seeded Kansas with a 20-point blowout of Florida in the regional final.

"It's tough to go against our zone when you've never seen it before," forward C.J. Fair said. "We want to force him to do some things he's not done before."

While Burke may be the most-watched player in the second game, all eyes figure to be on Ware in the opener, even though he'll never touch a basketball.

He lives near Atlanta and traveled with the team for the Final Four. When the Cardinals arrived Wednesday night, he was in a wheelchair and the plan is for him to be on the bench for the game.

Louisville faces some practical concerns not having Ware in the lineup.

He was the main substitute for Russ Smith and Siva, the guards who guide the Louisville press and its offense, as well.

"Our players totally understand the challenge that lies ahead with this Wichita State team," coach Rick Pitino said. "We understand with Kevin out that we not only have to play very hard, we have to play very, very smart."

(AP) ? Shanghai has reported two more cases of human infection of a new strain of bird flu, raising the number of cases in eastern China to 18. Six of the people who contracted the virus have died.

Health officials believe people are contracting the H7N9 virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there's no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people.

Shanghai's government said Saturday the latest victims are a 74-year-old peasant and a 66-year-old retiree. The city has been ordered by the agriculture ministry to halt its live poultry trade and slaughter all fowl in markets where the virus has been found.

The capital cities of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu also have suspended sales of live poultry. Both provinces have reported H7N9 cases.

Samsung SPH-L500 saunters by the FCC with Sprint-friendly LTE, hefty dimensions

Samsung SPH-L500 saunters by the FCC with Sprint-friendly LTE, hefty dimensions

Uncle Sam just played host to Samsung's SPH-L500 smartphone at the FCC, and it looks like the handset's next stop will be Sprint. With a 850 / 1900 CDMA radio and support for Band 25 LTE / SVLTE (simultaneous voice and data), the South Korean-designed smartphone carries the requisite kit to operate on the Now Network, and also packs WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and NFC. Though other details are scant, digging into the government paperwork reveals one major clue: size. Measuring up at roughly 5.2 inches tall and 2.6 inches wide, it's clear that we're in store for a hefty device, as it's ever so slightly smaller than the Galaxy S 4. Big Yellow and Samsung haven't made the hardware official just yet, but that's likely to change soon as it's cleared one of the final hurdles left between it and US availability.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Apologizes to Chinese Consumers

Apple CEO Tim Cook releases an apology to Chinese customers concerning their customer service and repairs, and mentions many forthcoming improvements.

Apple has yet again released an apology, this time to the people of China concerning their?warranty?policies, or lack thereof. The controversy?concerning?their?warranty?policy?for Chinese customers has been growing recently, with?unclear?small print about the?conditions, botched repair works, and a general low quality of standard.?

The letter, which can be seen on the website here, was signed by CEO Tim Cook. It mentioned many?forthcoming?improvements?to the quality of service. Among these?improvements?are clearer policy?statements, increased staff training and supervision, and a more streamlined channel of?communication?between the customer and Apple Feedback?Service. They also have?upcoming?plans to improve the methods by which?iPhone?4 and 4S repairs are handled?and?executed.

A week before the letter was released, the Chinese state media was in the process of openly criticizing Apple and their?handling?of complaints, calling them "Arrogant" in their attitude towards Chinese customers and insinuating that they evade local taxes and preach their innocence in the face of incriminating evidence.?

The letter responds to those claims by stating that Apple is aware that a lack of external communication on their part has led to these speculations, and that they offer both a?sincere?apology and?guarantee?that things will be set right. As the Chinese market is a huge asset to Apple both in the form of production and sales, it is hardly?surprising?that they issue an official apology addressing these serious?allegations.

The Advantages Of Decorating With Faux Stone. | The Blog On ...

Nearly half of all Americans use some variety of stone products, such as stacked stone or even brick, to try to?improve the atmosphere of their residences. There?s no question that these products are effective in enabling the individual to enjoy some kind of stone wall look; unfortunately they do not offer any long lasting solution or provide the saving that faux stone offers.

Imitation faux stone sheets

Decorating With Faux Stone.

For many decades our culture was used to having a member of the household do most the house work or light construction without having to pay an outside contractor. In-house construction and repairs used to be a very normal skill a household used to have. It was passed from one generation to another.
Today, for many reasons, most homeowners tend to hire a general contractor for various types of construction and even small home improvement projects.

The costs of employing a contractor today are often higher that what homeowners can afford. This is why some companies have come up with faux stone in order to provide a way of bypassing the need to hire external help.
With panels of faux stone a homeowner on a budget or anyone who doesn?t want to deal with costly labor can simply apply the panels on any surface on their own. They can pick the perfect product for their decoration preferences without having to wait for samples or design drawings.

Ordering And Delivery Process.

Another reason why faux stone is taking over cast stone, stone veneer and the cultured type in general is fact that anyone can order the material from the comfort of their desk and avoid paying high shipping costs deriving from the weight of traditional stone, brick and rocks.

Faux panels are approximately 9 pounds each and even with very large orders you can see a considerable saving. Some advanced web sites have a panel calculator as well as a shipping preview button. Beware of sites that do not quote you shipping costs. In the past we have found companies that billed their customers once the material was delivered.

Commercial Application Of Faux Stone

Commercial Application

Commercial And Residential Applications.

We have customers who switched from old style stones to faux stone have told us that they have no more interest in using products like cast stone or real rocks again. The ease of installation makes this product incredibly appealing to businesses. The biggest users of faux stone panels are display manufacturers. They love these panels because they help to reduce set up time at trade shows.
When using real stone it is impossible to screw the material in place and remove it when the show is over. This is only possible with high density resins faux panels.

So, the things to keep in mind when trying to make stone installation easy and affordable are these points. Come back often and take a look at our catalog to choose the style and color that goes with your design.
