i-mate talks up the Intelegent, a 4.7-inch slab of vaporware

imate talks up the Intelegent, a 47inch slab of vaporware

Don't worry if Dubai-based smartphone maker i-mate had slipped your mind. The business unceremoniously collapsed back in 2009 after allegedly suffering a "major fraud" that led it to fire all of its employees. Fortunately, CEO Jim Morrison is back with a new mobile device that, he claims, runs full-fat Windows 8 in the same way that Ubuntu for Android will behave. The i-mate Intelegent is a 4.7-inch handset running the desktop OS on a Clover Trail CPU with 2GB RAM and 64GB storage. The secret, however, is that the $750 handset will slot into a Webtop-esque desktop dock to become your work machine when you get into the office. Morrison has said that there's a factory in California ready to produce 10,000 units a week, and told the Seattle Times that he'd be showing off the device here at MWC. We can't find it on the exhibitor list, but we're about to go hunting...

Function Rooms North Sydney More Than Just Four Square Walls

Sydney as a whole has become a popular city for the corporate world and individuals to hold their corporate events, exhibitions, weddings, and birthday parties. Function rooms North Sydney are particularly sought after for the variety of floor plans, arrangements and services they offer.

There are numerous function rooms North Sydney venues to choose from like galleries, hotels, conference centres, exhibition centres, reception centres etc. They differ in size as well as service offered and depending on your budget, need of space and other services you can choose one thats right for you. The first criteria to be considered while choosing the venue is the reason or type of function, based on this you will be able to determine which kind of function room will be ideal. Like for example a corporate meeting of about 10 people would look quite inapprop0riate if held in an art gallery which has a capacity of about 100 people. The participants would feel lost in the empty space not to mention the difficulty one would have in arranging all the technical equipments needed to host a corporate meeting successfully.

The second criteria would be the amenities and services needed. Each event type needs a different set of amenities and services. A wedding reception would need a dance floor, bridal room, formal table settings, floral and other decorative arrangements and elaborate catering facilities including wedding cake etc, a corporate meeting would require audio and visual equipment, flip charts and writing boards, computers and internet facilities and a formal theatre-style or round-table seating arrangement, an art exhibition may need the right kind of spot-lighting on the paintings to highlight its beauty amongst various other arrangements including temperature and humidity control. The different venues are geared to serve different clientele and all you need to do is discuss your event type and they can guide you through to the right setting.

Once you have decided on the type of function rooms North Sydney to hire you must go through their floor plan. Most of these event managers are professionals and know their job pretty well however your needs and expectations will definitely be different from others and to make sure you are fully satisfied with the arrangements. Depending on the floor plan there are different types of seating arrangements to choose from theatre, classroom and U-shape. Similarly there are different floor plans for the festive event too like boardroom, cabaret, banquet and cocktail. It would be a good idea to hold business and boardroom meetings in rooms that have maximum natural light flowing in like glass windows from floor to ceiling, this should help keep the participants awake and fresh all day long. Also dont forget to ask for the coffee / tea vending machines as most office-goers are coffee addicts and it helps them to concentrate on the meeting better.

Pain from the brain

Monday, February 25, 2013

Psychogenic diseases, formerly known as 'hysterical' illnesses, can have many severe symptoms such as painful cramps or paralysis but without any physical explanation. However, new research from the University of Cambridge and UCL (University College London) suggests that individuals with psychogenic disease, that is to say physical illness that stems from emotional or mental stresses, do have brains that function differently. The research was published today, 25 February, in the journal Brain.

Psychogenic diseases may look very similar to illnesses caused by damage to nerves, the brain or the muscles, or similar to genetic diseases of the nervous system. However, unlike organic diseases, psychogenic diseases do not have any apparent physical cause, making them difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat.

"The processes leading to these disorders are poorly understood, complex and highly variable. As a result, treatments are also complex, often lengthy and in many cases there is poor recovery. In order to improve treatment of these disorders, it is important to first understand the underlying mechanism," said Dr James Rowe from the University of Cambridge.

The study looked at people with either psychogenic or organic dystonia, as well as healthy people with no dystonia. Both types of dystonia caused painful and disabling muscle contractions affecting the leg. The organic patient group had a gene mutation (the DYT1 gene) that caused their dystonia. The psychogenic patients had the symptoms of dystonia but did not have any physical explanation for the disease, even after extensive investigations.

The scientists performed PET brain scans on the volunteers at UCL, to measure the blood flow and brain activity of both of the groups, and healthy volunteers. The participants were scanned with three different foot positions: resting, moving their foot, and holding their leg in a dystonic position. The electrical activity of the leg muscles was measured at the same time to determine which muscles were engaged during the scans.

The researchers found that the brain function of individuals with the psychogenic illness was not normal. The changes were, however, very different from the brains of individuals with the organic (genetic) disease.

Dr Anette Schrag, from UCL, said: "Finding abnormalities of brain function that are very different from those in the organic form of dystonia opens up a way for researchers to learn how psychological factors can, by changing brain function, lead to physical problems."

Dr Rowe added: "What struck me was just how very different the abnormal brain function was in patients with the genetic and the psychogenic dystonia. Even more striking was that the differences were there all the time, whether the patients were resting or trying to move."

Additionally, the researchers found that one part of the brain previously thought to indicate psychogenic disease is unreliable: abnormal activity of the prefrontal cortex was thought to be the hallmark of psychogenic diseases. In this study, the scientists showed that this abnormality is not unique to psychogenic disease, since activity was also present in the patients with the genetic cause of dystonia when they tried to move their foot.

Dr Arpan Mehta, from the University of Cambridge, said: "It is interesting that, despite the differences, both types of patient had one thing in common - a problem at the front of the brain. This area controls attention to our movements and although the abnormality is not unique to psychogenic dystonia, it is part of the problem."

This type of illness is very common. Dr Schrag said: "One in six patients that see a neurologist has a psychogenic illness. They are as ill as someone with organic disease, but with a different cause and different treatment needs. Understanding these disorders, diagnosing them early and finding the right treatment are all clearly very important. We are hopeful that these results might help doctors and patients understand the mechanism leading to this disorder, and guide better treatments."

(AP) ? Former NBA star Dennis Rodman brought his basketball skills Tuesday and flamboyant style ? neon-bleached hair, tattoos, nose studs and all ? to the isolated communist country with possibly the world's drabbest dress code: North Korea.

Arriving in Pyongyang, the American athlete and showman known as "The Worm" became an unlikely ambassador for sports diplomacy at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea. Or maybe not so unlikely: Young leader Kim Jong Un is said to have been a fan of the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, when Rodman won three championships with the club.

Rodman is joining three members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team for a Vice Media production to air on HBO in early April, Vice founder Shane Smith told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview before the group's departure from Beijing.

Smith said the Americans hope to engage in a little "basketball diplomacy" by running a basketball camp for children and playing pickup games with locals, and by competing alongside top athletes of North Korea ? formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"Is sending the Harlem Globetrotters and Dennis Rodman to the DPRK strange? In a word, yes," said Smith, who is host of the upcoming series. "But finding common ground on the basketball court is a beautiful thing."

Rodman might seem an odd fit for an impoverished country where male fashion rarely ventures beyond military khaki and growing facial hair is forbidden. During his heyday in the 1990s, Rodman was a poster boy for excess. He called his 1996 autobiography "Bad as I Wanna Be" ? and showed up wearing a wedding dress to promote it.

Shown a photo of a snarling Rodman, piercings dangling from his lower lip and two massive tattoos emblazoned on his chest, one North Korean in Pyongyang recoiled and said: "He looks like a monster!"

But Rodman is also a Hall of Fame basketball player and one of the best defenders and rebounders to ever play the game. During a storied, often controversial career, he won five NBA championships ? a feat that quickly overshadowed his antics for at least one small North Korean group of basketball fans.

Rodman's is the second high-profile American visit this year to North Korea, a country that remains in a state of war with the U.S. It also comes two weeks after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test in defiance of U.N. bans against atomic and missile activity.

Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a surprise four-day trip to Pyongyang, where he met with officials and toured computer labs in January, just weeks after North Korea launched a satellite into space on the back of a long-range rocket.

Washington, Tokyo, Seoul and others consider both the rocket launch and the nuclear test provocative acts that threaten regional security.

North Korea characterizes the satellite launch as a peaceful bid to explore space, but says the nuclear test was meant as a deliberate warning to Washington. Pyongyang says it needs to build nuclear weapons to defend itself against the U.S., and is believed to be trying to build an atomic bomb small enough to mount on a missile capable of reaching the mainland U.S.

Vice, known for its sometimes irreverent journalism, has made two previous visits to North Korea, coming out with the "VICE Guide to North Korea." The HBO series, which will air weekly starting April 5, features documentary-style news reports from around the world.

The Americans also will visit North Korea's national monuments, the SEK animation studio and a new skate park in Pyongyang.

The U.S. State Department hasn't been contacted about travel to North Korea by this group, a senior administration official said, requesting anonymity to comment before any trip had been made public. The official said the department does not vet U.S. citizens' private travel to North Korea and urges U.S. citizens contemplating travel there to review a travel warning on its website.

In a now-defunct U.S.-North Korean agreement in which Washington had planned last year to give food aid to Pyongyang in exchange for nuclear concessions, Washington had said it was prepared to increase people-to-people exchanges with the North, including in the areas of culture, education and sports.

Promoting technology and sports are two major policy priorities of Kim Jong Un, who took power in December 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il.

Along with soccer, basketball is enormously popular in North Korea, where it's not uncommon to see basketball hoops set up in hotel parking lots or in schoolyards. It's a game that doesn't require much equipment or upkeep.

The U.S. remains Enemy No. 1 in North Korea, and North Koreans have limited exposure to American pop culture. But they know Michael Jordan, a former teammate of Rodman's when they both played for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s.

During a historic visit to North Korea in 2000, then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright presented Kim Jong Il, famously an NBA fan, with a basketball signed by Jordan that later went on display in the huge cave at Mount Myohyang that holds gifts to the leaders.

North Korea even had its own Jordan wannabe: Ri Myong Hun, a 7-foot-9 star player who is said to have renamed himself "Michael" after his favorite player and moved to Canada for a few years in the 1990s in hopes of making it into the NBA.

Even today, Jordan remains well-loved here. At the Mansudae Art Studio, which produces the country's top art, a portrait of Jordan spotted last week, complete with a replica of his signature and "NBA" painted in one corner, seemed an odd inclusion among the propaganda posters and celadon vases on display.

An informal poll of North Koreans revealed that "The Worm" isn't quite as much a household name in Pyongyang.

But Kim Jong Un was a basketball-crazy adolescent when Rodman, now 51, was with the Bulls, and when the Harlem Globetrotters, an exhibition basketball team, kept up a frenetic travel schedule worldwide.

In a memoir about his decade serving as Kim Jong Il's personal sushi chef, a man who goes by the pen name Kenji Fujimoto recalled that basketball was the young Kim Jong Un's biggest passion, and that the Chicago Bulls were his favorite.

The notoriously unpredictable and irrepressible Rodman said he has no special antics up his sleeve for making his mark on one of the world's most regimented and militarized societies, a place where order and conformity are enforced with Stalinist fervor.

But he said he isn't leaving any of his piercings behind.

Case-Shiller: Denver homes up 8.5% | Inside Real Estate News

Highlights:?

  • Case-Shiller shows Denver home prices up 8.5%
  • That is the biggest percentage gain since October 2001.
  • Inventory shortage remains the biggest concern for Realtors.
This 1,858-square-foot in home sold for $300,000, close to the average price in the metro area.

This 1,858-square-foot in home sold for $300,000, close to the average price in the metro area.

The Denver-area housing market showed a 8.5 percent year-over-year gain last December, according to the closely watched Case-Shiller index released today.

That was the biggest year-over-year percentage gain in more than 11 years. The last time it was higher was in October 2001, when home prices rose by 8.9 percent.

Overall, the percentage gain was good enough for 10th place of the 20 major metropolitan statistical areas tracked in the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices.?The overall annual percentage gain in December for the 20 MSAs was 6.8 percent.

In December 2011, Denver ranked No. 2, with a 0.4 percent loss, a sign of how much the nation?s market has recovered.?In December of last year, New York was the only city to show a loss, dropping by 0.5 percent. Phoenix led the pack, rising by 23 percent.

On a month-to-month basis, Denver fell by 0.3 percent, on a non-seasonally adjusted basis.

?The non-seasonally adjusted index dropped slightly from November to December, but the seasonally adjusted index was up a strong 0.8 percent,? said Lane Hornung, CEO and co-founder of 8z Real Estate.??With annual appreciation jumping to 8.5 percent, I will repeat my prediction from last month that the Denver MSA will post a double-digit appreciation number some time this spring.?

However, the Denver-area market needs more homes to sell, he and other brokers say. With fewer than 7,100 unsold resale homes on the market in January, the inventory of available homes is believed to be at the lowest level since the 1970s.

?The market desperately needs inventory,? Hornung said.

?To avoid entering a bubble market (and we all know how that turns out), perhaps we need to broadcast the following public service announcement: ?Calling all sellers, calling all sellers-now is a good time to sell!?

Peter Niederman, CEO of Kentwood Real Estate, said he is glad that Denver?s housing market is not showing the big gains of places such as Phoenix, although he is glad that the national housing market is recovering.

?I think the best commentary is not that Denver is in the middle of the pack, but all markets are starting to rise,? Niederman said.??I like where Denver is. It is right where it should be. Denver is performing wonderfully.?

It was not that long ago, he noted, ?that ?we were talking about Denver bucking the national trend. Now, we are seeing this breadth of improvement across all markets. That is very healthy for the overall housing economy and the U.S. economy. It?s like that old saying ? a rising tide lifts all boats.?

He said if Denver homes showed the kind of appreciation that the Phoenix market is enjoying, he would be worried.

?I would be very cautious if Denver was in the top five markets right now,? Niederman said. If prices went go up too fast, too soon, it makes the market unaffordable. Companies looking to locate here or grow here, would have second thoughts if homes were too expensive. It also would price many people out of the market.?

The average price of a single-family home sold and closed in January was slightly more than $300,000.

On national news reports, Niederman noted that economist Robert Shiller, co-creator of Case-Shiller, said that a shortage of homes has become a concern in many markets across the country, Niederman said.

?Shiller said new home builders are helping to fill the gap, but they aren?t building homes fast enough,? Niederman said.

?In Denver, builders are definitely help fill the void,? Niederman said. ?It?s a tale of two stories. On one level, new homes are competition for homes we are trying to sell. On the other hand, they are creating new supply. A big concern is that people will sell their homes quickly and won?t be able to find another one. In many cases, they can move into a new home, after selling their existing home.?

Builders also are constructing homes that consumers want, he said.

?They build to meet the demand,? Niederman said. ?It?s not the super-luxury home builders that are doing the best, but the builders who are constructing homes that are priced at a level where the demand exists. New homes are a good option for someone selling their existing home.?

Independent broker Gary Bauer said the Case-Shiller report shows that Denver is in a very good place relative to other national markets.

?Once again, Denver did not experience the very high peaks nor did it experience the very low valleys like many of these other markets, which are now showing bigger percentage gains than Denver,? Bauer said.

?Slow and steady is much better than these huge swings other markets are showing,? he said.

He agreed with other brokers that the inventory is the biggest problem currently facing the Denver market.

?Soon we will have the February numbers (from Metrolist) and it will be interesting to see if we see another decline in the number of houses on the market,? Bauer said.

?All the Realtors I talk to are putting shoe-leather on the street, ringing door bells and talking to homeowners about why now is a great time to be putting your home on the market. Hopefully, their efforts will pay off and we will start to see an increase in the supply to help us meet the demand.?

The national housing market ended last year on a strong said, according to?David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

?Home prices ended 2012 with solid gains,? Blitzer said ?Housing and residential construction led the economy in the 2012 fourth quarter. In December?s report all three headline composites and 19 of the 20 cities gained over their levels of a year ago. Month-over-month, nine cities and both composites posted positive monthly gains. Seasonally adjusted, there were no monthly declines across all 20 cities.

?The National Composite increased 7.3 percent ?over the four quarters of 2012. From its low in the first quarter, it surged in the second and third quarter and slipped slightly in the 2012 fourth period. The 10- and 20-City Composites, which bottomed out in March 2012 continued to show both year-over-year and monthly gains in December. These movements, combined with other housing data, suggest that while housing is on the upswing some of the strongest numbers may have already been seen.

?Atlanta and Detroit posted their biggest year-over-year increases of 9.9 percent and 13.6 percent since the start of their indices in January 1991. Dallas, Denver, and Minneapolis recorded their largest annual increases since 2001. Phoenix continued its climb, posting an impressive year-over-year return of 23.0 percent; it posted eight consecutive months of double-digit annual growth.?

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 hands-on: a ruggedized smartphone with Android Jelly Bean onboard

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 handson

It's gotten a bit drowned out in all the Note 8.0 fanfare, but there's another notable member of Samsung's Galaxy being shown off here at MWC 2013: the Xcover 2. Announced late this past January, the Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2) handset is a 4-inch ruggedized device made for active lifestyles. To that end, it bears IP certification for dust- and water-proofing (up to 30 minutes at a depth of one meter). Understandably, its spec load is modest, with a dual-core 1GHz processor (unspecified), 1GB RAM, 800 x 480 display, 4GB storage (expandable via microSD) and 1,700mAh battery.

Since the Xcover 2's meant to be taken outdoors, its body is rife with notches and grips -- so it won't slip out of your hand. The dimpled plastic back, similar to that on the Galaxy Nexus -- has a wrap-around illusion and can only be pried off by turning the lock at its base. Ports for microSD, SIM and 3.5mm headphone jack are all covered by protective flaps, as you'd imagine.

We couldn't get confirmation on the exact CPU inside the Xcover 2, but take our word for it: performance is sluggish. Effect any of the hard Android navigation keys on the bottom and you'll notice a bit of lag before the OS kicks into action. It's to be expected for a device of this nature -- most users eyeing the Xcover 2 likley aren't keen on top-end specs and high-performance. Samsung still hasn't clarified just where or when we'll be seeing the handset crop up, so stay tuned. In the meanwhile, check out our gallery below and brief video demo after the break.

How Long Can I Wait to Bring a Personal Injury Lawsuit in California ...

Have you or a loved one been injured in an automobile or other type of accident in California? If you answered yes, and are considering taking legal action to recover financial damages against the person or persons who injured you, the time to act is NOW. You may be familiar with the term ?statute of limitations,? which is the legal deadline for filing a lawsuit. In California, there is a statute of limitations for bringing personal injury claims; such as a car accident or slip and fall accident. Discuss the statute of limitations in detail with your Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, but know that according to the California law, most lawsuits ?MUST be filed within a certain amount of time. In general, once the statute of limitations on a case ?runs out,? the legal claim is not valid any longer.?

If you were injured in an accident Los Angeles and are considering bringing a personal injury claim against the person who you believe injured you, the lawsuit must be filed in a Los Angeles court two years from the injury. However, if you and/or your doctors did not discover the injury right away, you must bring the lawsuit 1 year from the date the injury was discovered. Unsure about the date of your injury?s discovery? An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer can talk with you and your doctor to determine when the statute of limitations began to run and make sure you file your lawsuit in time.

Be aware that the law regarding the statute of limitations also changes when a public entity (like a city bus driver) is at fault. If you or a loved one were injured by a government employee in Los Angeles, the statute of limitations to bring the lawsuit against the city or county is one year. There are also special rules regarding minors, the details of which a knowledgeable Los Angeles trial lawyer can discuss with you.

In almost every case, the sooner you speak to a skilled injury lawyer for help, the more effective we can be and the more likely you are to recover financial damages for lost wages, hospital bills, and other damages. You do not have to do this alone. BIKLAW is one your side.

If you have suffered?an injury in the Greater Los Angeles area?contact the experienced lawyers at the Trial Law Offices of Bradley I. Kramer today.

'Argo,' Lawrence win on slow Oscar night

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Ben Affleck's revenge? Maybe. Despite the "Argo" director's much-talked-about snub on the best director nomination list, his film took home the best picture Oscar Sunday night, the final award of an evening that seemed even more ploddingly paced than usual.

AP

The Ben Affleck-directed film "Argo," Jennifer Lawrence and Daniel Day-Lewis were major winners at Sunday night's Oscars.

Affleck seemed genuinely thrilled and touched as he speed-shouted out his thanks, including expressing gratitude to Canada, a near-necessity after that country's ambassador said he felt his nation's contributions to the 1980 rescue depicted in the film were underplayed.

"I was here 15 years ago and I had no idea what I was doing," Affleck said, referring to his 1997 original screenplay Oscar win for "Good Will Hunting." "I never thought I'd be back here."

In a surprise twist, the win for "Argo" was read not by presenter Jack Nicholson, but by first lady Michelle Obama, via a live satellite presentation from the White House.

Obama praised the importance of the arts in the lives of young people, saying "every day, through engagement in the arts, our children learn to open their imaginations, to dream just a little bigger and to strive every day to reach those dreams."

/

"Argo" beat out eight other best-picture contenders, including Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which was expected by many to dominate the night. But helped in part by publicity from the Affleck snub, "Argo" came on strong and by Oscar night, was considered by many to be a best-picture favorite.

"Lincoln" didn't follow through on its early best picture hopes, but for months, star Daniel Day-Lewis had been the overwhelming favorite. He didn't disappoint -- he took home his third best actor Oscar, making him the first actor to claim three wins in that category. He was quick to joke with presenter Meryl Streep, saying, "before we agreed to a straight swap, I had been commissioned to play Margaret Thatcher." Streep won an Oscar for playing Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" in 2011.

Jennifer Lawrence surprised many by claiming the best actress honor for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook," then surprised them again by tripping as she walked up to accept the award. She put her hands down on the stairs leading to the stage, steadied herself, and continued on to the microphone, making a quick joke about how the applause was sympathy for her fall.

Christoph Waltz won the night's first statuette, for "Django Unchained," 15 minutes into the show, kicking off a long slog of musical numbers and minor awards until Anne Hathaway's ?best supporting actress award an hour and a half later.

In his speech, Waltz gave special thanks to Quentin Tarantino, the film's director, saying "you climbed the mountain ... because you were not afraid."

Hathaway won as expected for her role as the desperate prostitute Fantine in the big-screen version of "Les Miserables," a part her own mother once played on a national tour.

"It came true," Hathaway said while holding her trophy. She closed her speech with the hope that in the future, "the misfortunes of Fantine will be found only in stories and never again in real life."

The best director category became controversial back when the nominees were announced, with Affleck and "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow left off the list. Many awards-watchers felt Steven Spielberg would claim the honor for "Lincoln," but it was Taiwanese director Ang Lee who won the Oscar for his work on "Life of Pi."

"Family Guy" host Seth MacFarlane began the show with a lengthy song, dance and humor segment that included an appearance by William Shatner, appearing as "Star Trek's" Captain Kirk, and chastising MacFarlane for a supposed poor performance that Kirk came back from the future to correct.

MacFarlane's humor is often risque, and a few lines from his opening segment and throughout the show earned gasps from the audience. He joked that "Django Unchained's" near-constant use of the n-word was because the film was "loosely based on Mel Gibson's voicemails."

Later in the show, MacFarlane complimented Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in "Lincoln," and said that "the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth." The reference to Lincoln's assassin didn't go over well, leaving MacFarlane to crack, "Really? 150 years and it's still too soon?"

The show's theme was?music in film, which was spotlighted in numerous segments.

The always-popular "In Memoriam" montage showing photos of those in the industry who died in the past year ended with an image of Marvin Hamlisch. As his image scrolled away, Barbra Streisand strolled on stage to sing Hamlisch's "The Way We Were," which won the best original song Oscar in 1973.

A montage of dramatic scenes from James Bond films was shown to celebrate that film franchise's 50th anniversary, with Bond girl Halle Berry introducing the footage. Singer Shirley Bassey, who sang three of the Bond theme songs, sang "Goldfinger" as part of the tribute.

It was a timely nod, because later in the show, singer Adele and co-writer Paul Epworth won the Oscar for best original song for "Skyfall," the theme to the latest Bond film.

A tribute to movie musicals featured Catherine Zeta-Jones singing "All That Jazz" from "Chicago," and Jennifer Hudson bringing down the house with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls." Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Russell Crowe and other cast members from "Les Miserables" capped off the performances with a medley from their musical.

Both screenplay awards went to best picture nominees. Quentin Tarantino won the original screenplay award for "Django Unchained," the slavery drama that had already won Waltz his supporting-actor honor. Praising the strong work of current screenwriters, including his competition, Tarantino announced, "This will be the writer's year!"

"Argo," adapted from an article in Wired magazine,?won the award for best adapted screenplay, with writer Chris Terrio dedicating the honor to CIA employee Tony Mendez, who was instrumental in the 1980 rescue of American embassy employees from Iran that forms the center of the film.

The best sound editing award ended in an Oscar rarity ? a tie. Presenter Mark Wahlberg announced the Academy had come to a split decision, and gave the award to both "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall."

"Life of Pi" won the most Oscars of the night. In addition to Lee's best director honor, the film claimed awards for cinematography, original score and visual effects. The winners of the visual effects award were cut off by the ominous theme from "Jaws" as their speech ran over ? a musical choice that was revisited later when?"Searching for Sugar Man," a documentary about little-known American singer Rodriguez and his unexpected popularity in South Africa, won the Oscar for best documentary feature and the film's director began to ramble.

"Brave," the story of a Scottish princess who battled to establish an adult relationship with her mother the queen, won the Oscar for best animated feature. "Paperman" won the award for best animated short.

"Anna Karenina" won for best costume direction, and "Les Miserables" for makeup and hair.

"Curfew" won the award for live-action short film, and "Inocente" for documentary short subject.

"Les Miserables" won the Oscar for best sound mixing.

"Lincoln" won for production design.

Austria's "Amour," which was also nominated for best picture, won the award for best foreign-language film. The film, set in France, stars French actress Emmanuelle Riva, who turned 86 on Oscar night and was a best actress nominee.

What social media platform is right for your business marketing ...

The internet is full of hundreds of social networks, most are unique niche markets but overall there are four major social networks that I believe every business should consider using.

The internet may be a big place but there are four social media companies that stand out above the rest for customer service and online marketing, each has a specific flavour and in most cases, each should be used in some way by your company

Facebook

With roughly a hundred trillion billion users (ok I don?t think it?s quite that many but it?s really huge) ?Facebook is the white whale of online marketing. It has a special business focussed section called Facebook Pages which is similar to the regular Facebook for users but allows businesses,?celebrities?etc. to create business specific profiles with everything from hours of operation to custom apps.

The Facebook page allows businesses to have Followers (or Fans) which works much like a one directional friendship in the regular user to user version of Facebook.

When should a company use Facebook? I would say all?businesses?should have a Facebook Page for their company, regardless of market since there?s an excellent chance that your employees, business contacts, and customers also have a Facebook profile.

How often should you update Facebook? This depends a lot on the type of content your Facebook profile displays but highlighting interesting sales, blog posts, employment?opportunities, etc. with your Facebook is a great use of the service. Remember, Facebook is about people and not advertising, if you have a fun video about your company to share this is a great forum for it.

http://facebook.com

Twitter

Twitter is a social media service designed for short bursts of communications, limited to 140 characters per message. It?s well indexed and provides a quick resource for finding answers quickly.

Relationships on Twitter are called Follows and work one direction at a time,?because?of this it?s possible for people to follow your business without your business following them back and is perfect for companies looking for?disseminate?information to a large audience but is?somewhat?limited since many Twitter messages will get lost in the sea of other Twitter messages.

When should a company use Twitter??All businesses should at least maintain a Twitter profile, and most should actively monitor their Twitter account for enquires the same way the use email (called Direct Messages in Twitter terms). Twitter increases in value dramatically when you?re sharing items that are likely to be shared by people with similar interests.

How often should you update Twitter??The nature of Twitter is one of rapid information, while it depends greatly on the company and the nature of a business on Twitter I would recommend business owners plan to monitor Twitter on an ongoing basis, reply to customers hourly throughout a work day, and post unique interesting content daily if they hope to see a return on their investment. Interesting posts, jobs, events, local news, etc are all great Twitter content.

http://twitter.com

Pinterest

The Pinterest social media platform is all about sharing images from websites, as such it is ideal for unique businesses such as catering, wedding planning, tourism, small retail, etc. to generate interest in products and services but doesn?t?accommodate?corporate messages well.

When should a company use Pinterest??If your business creates beautiful, unique product that would appeal to the visually focussed then Pinterest might be right for you. Remember, Pinterest is focussed on a consumer level market, so if you?re selling benefit plans it might not be right for you!

How often should you update Pinterest??Whenever you?re contributing something visually striking to the world, or have found some eye candy to share with your friends.

http://pinterest.com

Linkedin

Of the big four, Linkedin is the most corporate of all of them. It?s primary focus is business, as such your Connections (similar to Friends on Facebook) are business?colleagues, suppliers, and customers more often than people you?d play hockey with.

The site is great for finding skilled staff, researching prospective hires, building business networks, and promoting yourself into a business community.

When should a company use Linkedin??If your business is focussed on commercial growth, and business-to-business marketing more than consumer level marketing, Linkedin is the best for reaching your business peers and finding new suppliers, staff, and client research.

How often should you update?Linkedin??Linkedin should be updated regularly, to reflect large projects and employment status changes, to list job postings, mergers etc.

Getting Past the Grief over Grief

These days, I get a lot of grief about grief. I am part of the work group that changed some of the ways that grief and clinical depression are described and differentiated in the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, typically referred to as DSM-5. That has led to a lot of conversations with colleagues who are upset about bereavement.

The other day, a friend and fellow psychiatrist?whose son had died by suicide almost a year ago?took me aside to tell me how incensed he was about the elimination from earlier DSMs of language specifying a ?bereavement exclusion.? The ?exclusion? essentially detailed a two-month period of ?normal grief? that people would experience after the loss of a loved one. During this period, it was all but forbidden to diagnose a patient with major depression?even if the individual had all the symptoms (which are, in important and sometimes life-threatening ways, different from grief.)

This restriction was based on the best science from the mid-1980s, the last time DSM was fully revised, but the science of bereavement and major depressive disorder has changed. Our work group found the exclusion too limiting; normal grief often lasts much longer than two months, and a small subset of patients can have major depression triggered or exacerbated by a loved one?s death, just as they can from all kinds of losses and traumas.

But critics have convinced a lot of people that our goal was to diagnose every grieving person with major depressive disorder. It especially pained me to hear my friend say, ?How dare they label me with depression, as though I should have been over my grief months ago? How dare they imply I should take medications to drown my sorrow??

He missed his son intensely long after his death, thought about him frequently, and continued to experience waves of intense anguish and yearning for his son?s return. He felt like a piece of him was missing and that it would never be found. He had occasional problems sleeping through the night, difficulty watching some of the TV shows he and his son had enjoyed so much together. And he had yet to return to playing golf, which the two of them had also shared. He was fully back to work and seeing patients, but he couldn?t help worrying more than in the past when caring for potentially suicidal young people.

Despite his anger, he readily accepted my hug, my offer to take him to lunch and my eagerness to listen. I told him how sorry I was for his loss, that it was impossible for me to imagine how difficult it had been for him and his wife, and that I thought his continued grief was perfectly understandable?and in no way indicative of major depression. Like most people after a loss, he needed comfort, not treatment. We agreed to meet at a later time to talk about the bereavement exclusion. It was a fascinating discussion.

I made it clear to him that the elimination of the bereavement exclusion in no way, shape or form dictates how intense his grief should be or how long it should last. His feelings were absolutely normal. I also stressed how dropping the exclusion does not re-label grief as major depression, nor does it medicalize grief. That is not to suggest that grief is not ?depressing.? For many people, grief is very depressing, if by that you mean feeling sad, blue and down in the dumps. But those emotions are not the same as having a major depressive disorder, a serious clinical condition that certainly is not part of normal grief.

Our work group changed the grief language in DSM-5 to make sure clinicians and patients understand that major depression can occur in someone who is bereaved, just as it can occur in someone who is going through a divorce, facing a sudden disability or terminal illness, or struggling with serious financial troubles. There are no known clinically meaningful differences in the severity, course or treatment response of major depressive episodes that occur after the death of a loved one compared to those occurring in any other context. According to the best research available, any very stressful life event can trigger a major depressive episode in a vulnerable person; regardless of the context in which it occurs, prompt recognition and appropriate treatment can be life-promoting and even life-saving.

In addition, eliminating the bereavement exclusion in no way suggests that intense grief should be treated. Just the opposite. It makes clear, for the first time, how to spot and properly diagnose those individuals in whom major depression is triggered by the death of a relative or close friend ?which is the same way we diagnose everyone else. And treatment with medications is by no means automatic or the only option. In some cases, education and support during a period of ?watchful waiting?? may be the most appropriate intervention; in other cases?for example, when the person has had previous bouts of serious depression, or when the major depressive episode is particularly severe and persistent?more formal treatments with evidence-based psychotherapies and/or medications might be the best option.

My friend and I discussed how these changes might affect primary care physicians, who write most of the prescriptions for antidepressants and so, technically, diagnose most depressions. One of the main concerns voiced was that the bereavement exclusion, however clumsy and unscientific, was the only thing keeping some family physicians from ?giving every grieving patient an antidepressant after a 10-minute evaluation!? But we both agreed that the criteria for major depression should not be jiggered so as to anticipate poor practice by other clinicians. Instead, psychiatrists must provide more training and consultation to the other treatment professionals who might see grieving patients.

By the time our lunch ended, my friend?s view had softened.? As we talked about the difference between his extended grief and a major depressive disorder, he said that it maybe was time for him to look into a suicide survivors support group. He even allowed that, given his knowledge of the potential consequences of untreated major depression, he would assess a bereaved individual who met the diagnostic criteria in the same careful way he would any other patient.

We again hugged, and then we both headed back to work. In the end, we agreed: It is time to stop grieving the loss of the bereavement exclusion.

Click here to see a video of DSM-5?s Task Force Chair Dr. David Kupfer discussing the bereavement exclusion.

Sterling struggles after UK debt downgrade

(AP) ? The British pound is recovering after dropping against the world's leading currencies as markets reacted to a downgrade of the U.K.'s cherished triple-A credit rating.

During early trading Monday, sterling dropped to $1.5069 against the dollar ? its lowest level since July 2010 ? before bouncing back to $1.5144. Against the euro, the pound hovered around 18-month lows with one euro worth 0.8745 pound.

The pound was in focus in the wake of last Friday's decision by Moody's to downgrade the U.K.'s credit rating by one notch from the top AAA to AA1. The agency says sluggish growth and rising debt are weakening the British economy's outlook.

Two other major rating agencies ? Fitch and Standard & Poor's ? have also warned that they may downgrade the U.K. as well.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

(AP) ? Afghanistan's president on Sunday ordered all U.S. special forces to leave a strategically important eastern province within two weeks because of allegations that Afghans working with them are torturing and abusing other Afghans.

The decision seems to have caught the coalition and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, a separate command, by surprise. Americans have frequently drawn anger from the Afghan public over issues ranging from Qurans burned at a U.S. base to allegations of civilian killings.

"We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and go to great lengths to determine the facts surrounding them," the U.S. forces said in a statement.

Also Sunday, a series of attacks in eastern Afghanistan showed insurgents remain on the offensive even as U.S. and other international forces prepare to end their combat mission by the end of 2014.

Suicide bombers targeted Afghanistan's intelligence agency and other security forces in four coordinated attacks in the heart of Kabul and outlying areas in a bloody reminder of the insurgency's reach nearly 12 years into the war.

Presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said the decision to order the American special forces to leave Wardak province was taken during a meeting of the National Security Council because of the alleged actions of Afghans who are considered linked to the U.S. special forces.

He said all special forces operations were to cease immediately in the restive province next to Kabul, which is viewed as a gateway to the capital and has been the focus of counterinsurgency efforts in recent years.

The Taliban have staged numerous attacks against U.S.-led coalition forces in the province. In August 2011, insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter, killing 30 American troops, mostly elite Navy SEALs, in Wardak. The crash was the single deadliest loss for U.S. forces in the war.

Afghan forces have taken the lead in many such special operations, especially so-called night raids.

"Those Afghans in these armed groups who are working with the U.S. special forces, the defense minister asked for an explanation of who they are," Faizi said. "Those individuals should be handed over to the Afghan side so that we can further investigate."

A statement the security council issued in English said the armed individuals have allegedly been "harassing, annoying, torturing and even murdering innocent people."

Ceasing all such operations could have a negative impact on the coalition's campaign to go after Taliban leaders and commanders, who are usually the target of such operations.

Faizi said the issue had already been brought up with the coalition.

The U.S. statement said only that the announcement was "an important issue that we intend to fully discuss with our Afghan counterparts. But until we have had a chance to speak with senior Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials about this issue, we are not in a position to comment further."

The brazen assaults, which occurred within a three-hour timespan, were the latest to strike Afghan forces, who have suffered higher casualties this year as U.S. and other foreign troops gradually take a back seat and shift responsibility for security to the government.

The deadliest attack occurred just after sunrise ? a suicide car bombing at the gate of the National Directorate of Security compound in Jalalabad, 125 kilometers (78 miles) east of Kabul.

Guards shot and killed the driver but he managed to detonate the explosives-packed vehicle, killing two intelligence agents and wounding three others, according to a statement by the intelligence agency. Provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai confirmed the casualty toll and said the building was damaged in the attack.

A guard also shot and killed a man in an SUV filled with dynamite that was targeting an NDS building on a busy street in Kabul, not far from NATO headquarters. The explosives in the back of the vehicle were defused. Blood stained the driver's seat and the ground where security forces dragged out the would-be attacker.

Shortly before the Jalalabad attack, a suicide attacker detonated a minivan full of explosives at a police checkpoint in Pul-i-Alam on the main highway between Kabul and Logar province. One policeman was killed and two others were wounded, along with a bystander, according to the NDS.

Also in Logar province, which is due south of Kabul, a man wearing a suicide vest was stopped by police as he tried to force his way into the police headquarters for Baraki Barak district, said Din Mohammad Darwesh, the provincial government spokesman. The attacker detonated his vest while being searched, wounding one policeman, according to Darwesh and the NDS.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the Jalalabad attack and two others in the eastern province of Logar in an email to reporters. He did not address the attempted assault in Kabul.
