Secret Service agent leaves gun on Romney's plane

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? A Secret Service agent left a gun in the bathroom of a plane carrying Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

A reporter discovered the gun while the plane was flying from Florida to Indiana on Wednesday. It was quickly retrieved by a Secret Service agent. The weapon belonged to an agent assigned to Romney's security detail.

In Washington, Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan says the agency is aware of the incident and that the matter will be handled internally. He would not discuss who left the gun or how it was misplaced.

The agent involved was not on the afternoon flight to Tampa, Fla., the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney is scheduled to accept the presidential nomination on Thursday.

Michigan Municipal League, Other Organizations Call for Full and Guaranteed Replacement of Personal Property Tax Revenue if it is Cut

Scrapping the Michigan Personal Property Tax (PPT) without guaranteeing replacement funds for local services and schools would harm public school students, counties, libraries and police and fire protection across the state, a coalition of mayors and county and school officials warned during a press conference in Lansing Sept. 8, 2011. In addition, eliminating the PPT without guaranteeing replacement funds for local purposes would severely limit the ability of local governments and school districts to issue bonds for future capital projects and jeopardize their payments on existing debt, the Replace Don?t Erase coalition cautioned at a news conference today. Because PPT revenues go to local governments and schools and may not be touched by the legislature and governor, the revenues are viewed as stable funding sources by banks that finance large municipal projects. The event was attended by members of the media as well as numerous Michigan mayors and public officials. Speakers were Tom Mullaney, president, Michigan Association of Counties, Alpena County Commissioner; Dan Gilmartin, executive director and CEO, Michigan Municipal League; Richard Notte, Mayor of Sterling Heights; Christine Berro, Director, Portage District Library and past president of the Michigan Library Association; Gretchen Couraud, Executive Director, Michigan Library Association; Dave Weisenberg of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union; Howell Police Chief George Basar, Legislative Chairman and Past President, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police; and Stan Kogut, Superintendent of Ingham Intermediate School District, member of the Michigan Association of School Administrators; Tim McGuire, executive director of the Michigan Association of Counties, Deena Bosworth, legislative coordinator for the Michigan Association of Counties and Summer Minnick, director of state affairs for the Michigan Municipal League. Do You Know Anything About Commercial Real Estate? Learn ...

Before you invest in something, you should be an expert on this type of real estate. For instance, if you want to invest in apartments, you should know about legislation, safety requirements and have a good idea of what being a landlord means. If you are thinking about investing in an office building, you should understand what a company needs.

To make the right choice as you are searching for the right commercial property, you want to be aware of your surrounding businesses. You don?t want to be too close to those that are similar to you as it could steal some of your business, while creating heavy competition as well.

Investing in commercial real estate requires a specific understanding of the local market. Property values are largely determined by local market conditions like occupancy levels, rental rates and demographic trends, making an actual visit to the prospective property as well as touring the entire neighborhood a necessity.

Be prepared, as you will sometimes, lose due diligence money. Due diligence funds are those used to pay for inspections, appraisals, and other tests. There are times when you will spend this money only to discover you don?t want the property. Consider this part of your business investment and realize that it?s always smarter to walk away from a bad property, even if you have already invested due diligence money into it.

When you are looking for a broker, one of the things that you will have to focus on is whether they are a generalist or a specialist. A specialist will have more skills in the field that you are looking at, which will allow you to get the best possible deal.

When buying commercial properties, always remember what you will need to replace. Air conditioning and heating units usually need to be replaced within the first three to six months after purchase. If at all possible, convince the seller to change these out for you, in order to save the major costs and hassles associated with the job.

When marketing your enterprise online, do not focus on your own achievements. People will want to see that you have experience and know what you are doing, but you should focus your campaign on showing how a partnership with you would be fruitful, or on how you can solve people?s problems.

When setting up a rental agreement with a new tenant make sure you draw up an official contract. Even if your renters are your own friends or family. You do need to protect yourself and your property. Make sure your expectations are in the contract and they know exactly what you would expect from them.

If you have not done your first deal, do not get discouraged. Time is something you can expect to spend a great deal of on commercial real estate investments. Buying houses is easy, but there is quite a learning curve with investing in commercial real estate properties. Don?t give up. And remember, it will get faster with time.

Know about all the fees and taxes involved in investing in property and be prepared to pay them. If you are looking at properties that need repair, understand that you will have to bring them up to code in order to resell and make money. Have a budget ready that will cover all your expenses without stress.

Carefully considering a deal, gathering research about the property, and negotiating offers can be time consuming, and it can sometimes be tempting to speed up the process. Remember, however, that you gain nothing by rushing into a decision that is poorly thought out. Patience and prudence are the keys.

Negotiate the terms of your lease. If you are a small business owner, you should negotiate one or two year leases to ensure flexibility to grow your business. Have an option to renew your lease if you need to with a predetermined rent amount to avoid unexpected, usually catastrophic rent increase at the end of the term.

Be sure you do your research before buying properties from sheriff or tax sales. While these sales are a great way to get a deal on a property, you need to know in advance if any of the properties available have other outstanding liens (a charge upon real or personal property for the satisfaction of some debt or duty). Once you become the owner of the property, you may also be responsible for settling these liens.

From the information you learned in this article you should feel more comfortable about purchasing all types of commercial real estate. Keep in mind all of the tips you just learned and read about and you should be well on your way to being successful in your commercial real estate endeavors.

Catholic Embroidery: Our Threaded Family Tree - Part II

Greetings from Ireland! While here on the Emerald Isle, I thought it only appropriate for the next installment of "Our Threaded Family Tree" - the Ireland edition!

The art of embroidery and needlework lies deep within our family's history. Despite the fact that our family heritage includes such striking differences in American settlers - such as Irish Immigrants, Italian printers and butchers, German?aristocrats, and rebel soldiers in the Civil War - one thing seems to remain a general interest among many: embroidery and needlework. ?Join us as we travel around the country, tracing a deep-rooted interest in sewing amidst a world of Indians, Immigrants, and convents, unknowingly paving the way for what is now known as, "Catholic Embroidery".?

Part II - From Emerald Isle to Ellis Isle

Bridget (Beatrice) Stenson Ludwig - Born in Tubercurry, Co. Sligo Ireland in 1891

In 1910, a young pious Catholic Irishwoman left the growing hardships in a struggling country to find a better life in the the land of opportunity. Seeking shelter in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, Beatrice Stenson, known for "never walking, but running", greeted Ellis Island with all the energy of her 19 years. Beatrice began employment as a domestic, often assigned to the lowest and meanest of jobs in a wealthy household. After three years of life in America, "Bea" met and married Frederick Ludwig, a German immigrant, and raised a family of 6 children together with him in a small apartment in the Bronx. When Frederick passed away in 1935, Beatrice was forced to take on odd jobs and begin a laundry service from her home, while also allowing her oldest daughters to work and supplement their small income.

To keep the family fed and clothed throughout life in the small apartment, Beatrice washed laundry and offered her services as a seamstress.?Her handiwork with needle and thread was known far and wide for it's excellence. Many wonders were worked with her needle, favorites of which still live on in the memory of her granddaughters, who treasured handmade dresses - labors of love from Grandmother "Bea".

Thank you, great-grandmother Beatrice, for the gift of your hands and the example of a truly Valiant Woman - in more ways than one.

"Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her... She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands... she hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle... Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day... Her children rose up and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her."

My German Host Parents Visit | Rowan Family Tree

When I was 17/18 years old, I lived in Gemany for a year on a Rotary youth exchange. My first host?family was very special ? I lived with them for five months but we?ve kept in good contact over the years. In fact, I?ve been back to visit them a few times.

Last night they arrived in Kelowna and we were very happy to show them around the Okanagan sights today. It?s been so wonderful to have them here, and share our family and home with them.

Enjoy the pictures (warm greetings to?my host siblings in Germany!)

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers are stocking up for the stretch run with some new, expensive players who couldn't help the Boston Red Sox make it to the postseason this year or last.

The Dodgers acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and injured outfielder Carl Crawford from Boston on Saturday, hoping to boost their playoff hopes by taking on the underperforming and high-priced stars who failed to thrive in a fractious Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston also sent infielder Nick Punto and about $11 million in cash to Los Angeles in the nine-player trade that was the biggest in Dodgers history. In return, the Red Sox got first baseman James Loney, pitcher Allen Webster, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and two players to be named while shedding more than $250 million in salaries through 2018.

"We understand that you have to spend money to be good in this league," said Magic Johnson, the former NBA star who is part of the rich new Dodgers ownership group that has dramatically revamped their roster in the last month.

"When we came in, we made it clear that we want to build the Dodgers back to what they once were," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said.

Los Angeles, which trailed the San Francisco Giants in the NL West by three games at the time of the trade, has in the past month acquired shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Shane Victorino, starter Joe Blanton and reliever Brandon League. The latest deal comes less than a week before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason.

"It's just exciting," Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp said. "Everybody wants to win, and the guys up there are really making a statement and showing us that they want to win just as bad as we do."

For the Red Sox, who entered the night 13? games back in the AL East, the trade signaled a concession for 2012 and a chance to rebuild without hefty contracts given during an undisciplined foray into free agency that, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington conceded, has not worked out.

"It gives us an opportunity to build the next great Red Sox team," Cherington said. "We just felt like to get to be a team we believe in and a team the fans deserve, to sustain winning year after year, it was going to take something more than cosmetic changes. It was going to take something bold."

The Red Sox will save $261 million in salaries through 2018, plus a few million more for the rest of this season. Boston will send $11 million going to the Dodgers as part of the deal, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because the financial terms were not public.

"The bottom line is we haven't won enough games. That goes back to last September," Cherington said. "We just haven't performed on the field. As a team we haven't performed. ... This is not about the four players we gave up ? anything particularly they did wrong. We just didn't perform as a team."

Beckett was a key part of the team that won the 2007 World Series, but he was also the ringleader last year when the ballclub went 7-20 in September and missed a playoff spot on the final day of the season. Reports of players drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games surfaced afterward, and Beckett's haughty demeanor ? and rising ERA ? continued to alienate fans.

The 2003 World Series MVP with the Florida Marlins, Beckett now moves from fried chicken to the land of In-N-Out Burger, bringing with him a pair of other players who were not productive enough to justify their contracts. Beckett was due $31.5 million over the next two years; Gonzalez has $127 million coming through 2018; Crawford is due $102.5 million over the next five seasons.

Both Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein after the September collapse, and manager Bobby Valentine, who was brought in to replace Terry Francona, defended their departing players. But Valentine agreed that change was needed in the clubhouse.

"Yes. It was necessary," he said. "(It) just didn't seem like it mixed as well as it should."

Players traded in August have to first pass through waivers. Any team with a worse record than Los Angeles could have claimed Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford before the Dodgers, but it would have had to pick up their contracts.

Instead, the teams worked out a deal that reshuffled the NL West race and had the rest of baseball talking, too.

"It's surprising," New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're not used to seeing that many big names go in one trade ? a bunch of All-Stars, guys who have been in World Series and played at a very high level."

Red Sox players said before Saturday night's game against Kansas City that they were surprised to see their longtime teammates gone in a deal that came together quickly. Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford were already on their way to Los Angeles on Saturday, according to a picture Punto posted on Twitter; Boston pitcher John Lackey had already claimed Beckett's locker, pulling rank over Clay Buchholz.

"Nothing surprises me in this game," Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross in the Fenway Park clubhouse, where the nameplates had already been removed from his former teammates' lockers. "This isn't your normal trade. This is a blockbuster deal that will probably go down as one of the biggest, but it still doesn't surprise me."

Gonzalez, a former San Diego Padres star, said on Twitter in English and Spanish that he was excited to get back to California. Beckett joined the social media site to thank Red Sox fans, writing "Even in the tough times I ran into so many wonderful people that were so awesome I'm Greatly appreciative to all of you."

The 32-year-old Beckett is 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts this season. A three-time All-Star, he is 130-92 lifetime with a 3.93 ERA.

Gonzalez, 30, is a four-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner. He hit .300 with 15 home runs and 86 RBIs this season, his second since being traded by San Diego to Boston.

Crawford, at 31, hit .282 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games this season. He had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow this week and is expected to take six to nine months to recover. Crawford was a four-time All-Star with Tampa Bay before signing with Boston.

The 34-year-old Punto hit .200 with one homer and 10 RBIs as a backup.

Loney hit .254 with four homers and 33 RBIs for the Dodgers this season. At 28, he'd spent his whole career in Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old DeJesus was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He hit .273 in 23 games for the Dodgers this year. Webster, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 6-8 with a 3.55 ERA at Double-A Chattanooga.

The Red Sox and Dodgers haven't made a lot of deals over the years. Perhaps the most notable came in the summer of 1939 when Boston sent a minor leaguer to Brooklyn: future Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese.

Nigeria military rescues 27 kidnapped oil workers

Nigerian military forces stormed the hideout of a militant gang operating on the waters of oil-producing Cross River State and rescued 27 abducted oil workers, a navy spokesman said Sunday.

"It was a joint military operation involving the navy and the army. Twenty-seven oil workers were rescued on Friday, while one is still missing," Lt. Commander Ajibola Olabisi told AFP.

He said 28 workers of Sinopec, an oil-servicing company, had been kidnapped on Thursday in Ikang near the state capital Calabar by an armed gang called the Lactop Marine Force.

Olabisi said members of the gang had been terrorising residents of the area for a long time before the troops moved in to dislodge them.

"The criminals fled as soon as our men stormed their hideout. Nobody was either killed or injured during the operation," he said, adding that the military were on the trail of the kidnappers.

For several years, Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta was hit by militant attacks until a 2009 amnesty deal sharply reduced unrest in the region.

The militants that operated there were notorious for kidnapping foreign and local oil workers for ransom. Despite the amnesty, sporadic incidents continue to occur.

Unrest in the region had curbed oil production in Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer and the world's eighth largest, to less than one million barrels per day, but output has recovered since the amnesty to more than two million barrels.

Anti-Islam ads force U.S. transport agency to ... - Morocco World News

New York, August 24, 2012

A campaign that places ads on public transport against Islam and Palestinians in the United States has forced a transportation agency to review its policies.

?In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man,? reads one of the ads on the sides of buses in New York. Then, between two Stars of David, the tag line appears: ?Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.?

The ads which have reportedly appeared in New York, Connecticut and San Francisco have compelled Metropolitan Transportation Authority to reconsider its policy on non-commercial advertisements.

?The MTA sells advertising space to raise revenue to support mass transit operations. MTA?s existing policy for ads carried on subways, buses and trains permits both commercial and non-commercial paid advertisements,? the McClatchy-Tribune News Service reported the MTA as saying in a statement.

?The MTA does not decide whether to allow a proposed advertisement based upon its viewpoint and the MTA does not endorse the viewpoint in this or any other paid advertisement. MTA is currently reviewing its policy of accepting non-commercial viewpoint advertisements,? the statement added.

MTA is also the parent organization of Metro-North in Connecticut, the state that saw five of its stations on the New Haven Line ? Greenwich, Cos Cob, Noroton Heights, Darien and South Norwalk ? having slogans such as ?It?s not Islamophobia, It?s Islamorealism,? in red lettering on a black background. Above the slogan the poster lists the number 19,250, the purported number of terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic extremists since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In San Francisco, meanwhile, the city?s Municipal Transportation Agency denounced the ads and ran huge disclaimers on the sides of the buses to denounce what a spokesman called the ?repulsive? message from the campaigners. The spokesman also said MTA was forced to accept the ads.

The anti-Islam campaign was created by Pamela Geller, a blogger and head of the American Freedom Defense Infinitive (AFDI). Geller has also spent $10,000 for the campaign.

?I hope people will gain a new understanding of the nature and magnitude of the jihad threat,? Geller, who was also against the construction of an Islamic cultural center and mosque near the site of the World Trade Center, said.

Last month, meanwhile, a U.S. District Court Judge Paul Engelmayer issued a ruling saying that MTA has violated Geller and the AFDI?s free speech rights by rejecting an earlier advertisement it considered discriminatory against members of the Muslim religion.

According to The New York times, opponents of the campaign are working to edit Geller?s messages by inverting them.

?In any war between the colonizer and the colonized, support the oppressed. Support the Palestinian right of return. Defeat racism,? read a statement in an image posted on Facebook last week by an Oakland blogger. The image showed that text was added to the side of one bus.

Liliana Segura, an editor at The Nation, joined the opponent campaign when she posted an image of an ad on Twitter last month.

In the message alongside the picture, Seguar wrote: ?Just a friendly reminder about Palestine, at the Yonkers Metro North Station.?

Segura?s photograph shows the ad from the Committee for Peace in Israel and Palestine, which illustrated the ?Palestinian Loss of Land? from 1946 to 2010 through a series of maps. The text next to the illustration said: ?4.7 Million Palestinians Are Classified by the U.N. as Refugees.?

One year ago, Hurricane Irene sent cars bobbing down rivers, swept away covered bridges, put millions in the dark and killed dozens of people along the East Coast.

As Irene made landfall in North Carolina and roared north along a densely populated corridor loaded with high-rises, suburban sprawl and pricey beach homes, fears of storm surges and heavy winds lead to evacuations of low-lying coastal areas and the shuttering of one of the world's largest subway systems.

The storm made a direct hit on New York City, but the lashing rains saved their most dramatic damage for 100 miles or more inland. Irene knocked out power to thousands, flooded miles of roads and became the costliest Category 1 U.S. hurricane on record since at least 1980, with estimated total damage of $15.8 billion.

Here's a gallery of photos of the storm and its aftermath.

Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012)

By Joel Santo Domingo

If you don't need quad-core processing power, but still need a stable, comfortable keyboard to do your writing, the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (mid 2012) ($999 list) might be the chariot you're looking for. It's the MacBook for those who already have a larger MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac Pro at home, but need something more portable. Its full keyboard makes it a better writing tool than simply carrying around an iPad or other tablet. Plus, it fits perfectly on an airplane tray table. However, competition from ultrabooks and other ultraportables has narrowed the lead the MacBook Air once enjoyed. It's still a nice machine to be sure, and it's improved over previous models, but now there are alternatives.

Design and Features
The 11-inch MacBook Air's chassis hasn't changed too much from the previous iteration. It still measures 0.68 by 11.8 by 7.56 inches (HWD) and it still tapers down to a 0.11-inch wedge point. It has the same updated, chiclet-style, backlit keyboard as the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) , as well as the same glass touchpad with multitouch functions. The trackpad supports one-, two-, three-, and four-finger gestures, and while it can take a while to get used to using four fingers to bring up stuff like the iPad-like Launchpad, but it's easy to get used to. For example, two fingers swiping from the right edge of the trackpad brings up the Notification Center, a new feature of OS X Mountain Lion. The keys are comfortable to type on, though they understandably have a shorter key travel than you may be used to with a full-sized laptop. The key travel is not as short as on uncomfortable Vizio laptops like the Vizio 15.6-inch Thin + Light (CT15-A1) , but the keys may feel stiff if you're used to a desktop keyboard. The palm rest, like the rest of the unibody construction, is made from machined aluminum. The system weighs a feather-light 2.36 pounds alone, and 2.79 pounds with its AC adapter.

The system's screen measures 11.3-inches diagonally, with a 1,366-by-768 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. While 1,366-by-768 is starting to feel cramped on larger 13- and 14-inch ultrabooks and laptops, the screen resolution is fine for the 11-inch form factor. Text and images look crisp without any pixilation. Still, 11-inch laptops are still an odd size, with most ultrabooks centering on the 13-inch form factor, like the 13-inch Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-R5102F with its 1,920-by-1,080 resolution display. You'll find other outliers like our business ultraportable Editors' Choice, the 12.5-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X230 . The X230 has the more common 1,366-by-768 display.

The top of the screen houses a 720p FaceTime camera, which can be used to video conference with other Macs and iOS devices like iPhones and iPads. The left-hand side of the system has Apple's new MagSafe 2 port, which uses a slimmer connector than the older MagSafe AC adapters that came with previous MacBook laptops. It's not an inconvenience if this is your first MacBook, but you'll find it to be a pain if you have older MagSafe AC adapters lying around your house or office. Apple has a $9.99 MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter in its stores that you can use with older AC adapters or Apple displays. Apple displays like the 24-inch Cinema display and the 27-inch Thunderbolt display have built-in leads for MagSafe charging.

The MacBook Air comes with a single Thunderbolt (10Gbps) port on the right, which can drive a Mini DisplayPort monitor without an adapter. You'll need separate adapters for HDMI, VGA, or DVI output, none of which are included. There are two USB 3.0 ports, one on each side, which are themselves ten times faster (5Gbps) than the old MacBooks' USB 2.0 ports (480Mbps). Last but not least is a headset jack that works with the one that came with your iPhone. Notably absent is a SD card reader, because there doesn't seem to be room for it, (the previous 11-inch MBA didn't have one either). Like all new Macs, the MacBook Air comes with iLife apps (iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, etc.) and iTunes for music and videos. Speaking of videos, 720p videos display fine on the system's widescreen, and even 1080p HD videos look OK (downscaled to fit the display). We didn't see any stuttering or missed frames while viewing 1080p trailers like the ones for Wreck It Ralph and Star Trek.

The MacBook Air comes with 64GB of Flash Storage, which isn't a lot. If your top-of-the-line (64GB) iPhone 4S or iPad is full, you won't be able to sync it with this MacBook (you'll run out of space). Therefore, the MacBook Air 11-inch is best thought of as an adjunct to a more powerful MacBook Air or iMac at home or in the office. It's got enough space to load Photoshop, Office, and a couple of other programs, but it's not large enough to keep your entire iTunes music and video libraries, unless you leverage iTunes Match heavily by keeping all those files in the cloud. Speaking of iCloud, you can use the MacBook Air to remotely access your Mac at home over Wi-Fi, a 4G USB Modem, or some external mobile hotspot. It worked great at this task. The system comes with dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi built in.

Performance
The MacBook Air isn't really a power machine, but it gets the job done. It is able to complete our Photoshop test in 5 minutes 16 seconds and the Handbrake video test in 2:55. Both tests were done in OS X. The previous MacBook Air (Thunderbolt) with the same clock speed, but an older second generation Intel Core i5 processor was slower at 5:36 for Photoshop, and 2:27 for Handbrake. The MacBook Air was able to complete the video rundown test with a battery life of 4 hours, 14 minutes, which is a lot less than its sibling, the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) which lasted almost 7 hours (6:56). We ran MobileMark 2007 under Windows 7 in Boot Camp, and got 5:19, which lags both the Asus ZenBook Prime UX31A (6:21) and the Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (7:45). The MacBook Air got a decent 4,246 point score on PCMark7 (again under Windows 7 Boot Camp), on par with the Zenbook Prime (4,315 points). That score isn't surprising, as the Zenbook Prime and MacBook Air both have speedy flash-based storage and ultra low voltage Intel Core i5-3317u processors under the hood. The takeaway is that the MacBook Air will feel fast doing day to day tasks, but don't expect all day battery life nor should you expect the 11-inch MacBook Air to be the photographer's best friend. It's really best suited for on the road writing and college student use.

Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012)

The MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012) is a great laptop for writers. It's light at less than 2.5 pounds, and even if you cart along the AC adapter, you're still carrying less than 3 pounds. It's speedy enough for day to day use, and its keyboard is more comfortable to use than the virtual keyboard on a tablet. Unfortunately, ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime have caught up in features: the UX31A is imperceptibly heavier, yet has a larger 1080p screen and much more storage space on its SSD. Full blown business ultraportables like the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X230 are better still at most tasks, including battery life and storage. The 11-inch MacBook Pro is best as a secondary laptop for when you need more than a tablet.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid-2012) with several other laptops side by side.

Obama dishes on friendship with George Clooney

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says actor George Clooney is a good friend and a good person who is sensitive about protecting that friendship.

Obama says Clooney is low-maintenance and doesn't take advantage of their friendship. He says Clooney keeps his distance so that Obama won't be criticized for hanging out with Hollywood celebrities.

First lady Michelle Obama said of Clooney: "He's cute, too."

In May, Clooney held a fundraiser for Obama at his Los Angeles home that raised nearly $15 million. Clooney is scheduled to hold another fundraiser for Obama later this month in Geneva.

Obama tells Entertainment Tonight in an interview airing Monday that he got to know Clooney through his work on Sudan when Obama was in the U.S. Senate.

B.C. newspaper tycoon David Black proposes $13-billion oil refinery for Northern Gateway oil

VANCOUVER - B.C. community newspaper tycoon David Black proposed today building a $13-billion oil refinery near Kitimat to use all of the crude from Enbridge's controversial Northern Gateway pipeline.

It would mean tankers would ship refined fuels like gasoline off of B.C. northwest coast, not heavy oil from Alberta, reducing environmental risks, says Black.

A refinery also promises 10 times as many jobs as an export pipeline.

Black is hoping his proposal will change opposition from British Columbians and first nations, many of which have rejected the $6-billion project because they say the economic rewards for B.C. are not great enough to offset the risk and consequence of an oil spill on the pipeline or off the northwest coast of British Columbia.

Last month, B.C. Premier Christy Clark also declared the province would not even consider the Northern Gateway project unless it gets a much greater share of the economic benefits.

Acknowledging that oil producers that want to ship oil on the Northern Gateway pipeline are not in favour of a refinery in B.C., Black said his new company, Kitimat Clean Ltd., is submitting an environmental assessment application to build the refinery.

Since the economic returns from a refinery are less than exporting oil, and no company has stepped forward to spearhead the project, he decided to do it himself, said Black.

He first proposed the idea to Canada's oil companies seven years ago when he was chairman of the B.C. Progress Board, and resurrected the idea 11 months ago.

"I am hoping to serve as a catalyst to attract an industry consortium that will undertake the project. But if no industry player steps forward during the two-year environmental assessment I will do all that I can to organize the capital and build the refinery," said Black, who owns 150 community newspapers in B.C. and the United States.

Added Black: "I think the pipeline and the refinery are crucially important to our northern communities, to B.C., to Alberta and to Canada. We must protect the environment, but we must create jobs for the next generation as well. It is our responsibility to do both."

The proposed refinery in Kitimat would provide many more jobs than an export pipeline.

The refinery is estimated to create 3,000 jobs, half of those directly in the refinery and the other half in contract jobs. Another 6,000 workers would be hired during the five-year construction period.

Black is proposing to reduce capital costs from Canada's high labour rates by building refinery modules offshore to be shipped to Kitimat.

The Northern Gateway pipeline is estimated to create about 350 permanent and contract jobs in B.C., one-tenth of the permanent jobs a refinery would create.

A pipeline would also create thousands of jobs during its three-year construction phase.

The planned Northern Gateway pipeline is meant to open up new markets for crude from the Alberta oilsands, breaking the reliance on the U.S. market, and as a result bringing a higher price for Canada's oil, an estimated $25 billion more a year.

That goal can be achieved with a refinery on the coast with access to Pacific Rim markets, said Black.

The refinery will also remove any threat of "catastrophic" offshore pollution from heavy crude oil because refined fuels such as diesel, gasoline and kerosene evaporate, said Black.

There would also be about 30 per cent less tanker loads into Kitimat because the diluent used to thin the crude oil shipped to Kitimat would be stripped out during refining and sent back to Alberta via pipeline.

Black also argues that building the refinery in B.C. will ensure it is a state-of-the-art facility with a lower environmental footprint than in other areas.

While it will produce about seven million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, those emissions would have been produced anyway, he said.

Black has briefed the B.C. premier, Clark, but he said the province hasn't told him what their position on his proposal is yet.

He added there are many legitimate concerns from first nations along the pipeline.

"In my view we should not proceed with the pipeline or refinery unless there is confidence that any pipeline leakage will be immaterial," said Black.

Israel sees monthlong war after Iran strike

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear program could trigger a bloody monthlong war on multiple fronts, killing hundreds of Israelis or more, the Israeli Cabinet's civil defense chief warned in an interview published Wednesday.

It was the most explicit assessment yet of how the government sees events unfolding in the aftermath of an Israeli attack.

Matan Vilnai, who is stepping down as the "home front" Cabinet minister to become Israel's ambassador to China, described the scenarios to Israel's Maariv daily at a time of heightened debate about the Iranian nuclear threat.

Vilnai, a retired general who was deputy military chief of staff, has spent the past five years overseeing upgrades of Israel's civil defense systems, including air-raid sirens, bomb shelters and a public alert system.

In the Maariv interview, Vilnai said "the home front is ready as never before." Nonetheless, he said the country must be braced for heavy casualties in the case of conflict with Iran.

Vilnai said the government has prepared for the possibility of hundreds of rockets and missiles falling on Israeli population centers each day, with the expectation of 500 deaths.

"It could be that there will be fewer fatalities, but it could be there will be more. That is the scenario that we are preparing for according to the best experts," he said. "The assessments are for a war that will last 30 days on a number of fronts."

Israel is convinced that archenemy Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons, dismissing Tehran's claims that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. Israel considers nuclear-armed Iran to be a mortal danger. Iran backs anti-Israel militants with funds and weapons, and its leaders often call for Israel's destruction.

In his latest pronouncement, Iranian Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said Israel will disappear from "the scene of geography." Addressing war veterans in Tehran on Wednesday, he said Iran considers it its "religious duty to save this Islamic country (Palestine) from the clutches of the Zionist occupiers."

Israel's leaders have indicated an attack is a possibility if they conclude the international community has failed to halt the Iranian nuclear program.

Vilnai did not elaborate on how he reached his assessments, but his office relies on intelligence and other assessments about Iranian weapons capabilities and Israeli susceptibility. Defense Minister Ehud Barak has also said the Israeli death toll could be in the range of 500 in such a conflict.

"Just as the citizens of Japan have to realize that they can have earthquakes, so the citizens of Israel have to realize that if they live here, they have to be prepared to expect missiles on the home front," Vilnai said. "It's not pleasant for the home front, but decisions have to be made, and we have to be ready."

Vilnai has made similar comments in other media outlets in recent days.

At a news briefing in Washington on Tuesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reaffirmed the U.S. assessment that Israel has not yet decided whether to strike, while the U.S. military chief, Gen. Martin Dempsey, echoed a widely held assessment that an Israeli operation would only set back, not destroy, Iran's nuclear project.

Vilnai was stepping down Wednesday to take up his new post in China. He is being replaced by a former internal security service chief, Avi Dichter.

Public Speaking | iguessiwriteforfree

Brisbane City Council, flickr creative commons

Yeah! This is what I felt like on the inside!

Turns out, I?m not afraid of public speaking.

I figured out a great trick: I have to know what the heck I?m talking about.

Last week, I got a last-minute invite to talk about blogging at a meeting with the Gilbert Small Business Alliance.

With less than 24 hours to prepare, I whipped up an outline. While Lou cleaned the dishes that night, I rehearsed my presentation.

And, because my husband is awesome, when I ?opened the floor? for some Q&A, he asked multiple questions and spoke in a different character voice each time.

I expected I?d be super nervous before the presentation. Instead, I was just slightly sweaty as I blabbed in front of the small crowd of florists, mediators, floor cleaners, and other independent business owners.

Rather than run the risk of offending someone with my godless, eff-word-filled blog, I mostly concentrated on The Root Word, a blog that I edit for the fantastic hair experts at The Root Salon.

The audience asked some really great questions, shared their own blog ideas, and I received some great feedback from the organizers. All in all, I think it went well.

Of course, the big win for me was not feeling terrified.

And, as a bonus, I now have an outline so I can easily write a blog about blogging.

Be the first to like this.

Just a simple light switch, you say? Look closer. Think Automatic's Luminode dimmer switch hides both a processor and a mesh network connection that lets every switch in the home coordinate with each other. A multi-tap system makes it possible to link multiple lights together without extra wiring or complex programming, but that's just the start: it's possible to create "scenes" of predefined lighting levels and, with a USB adapter, hook up to home automation systems (including Think Automatic's own) that can learn usage habits, track energy consumption or simply let us control the array with our smartphones. The platform uses raw XML to communicate and already talks to GE, Insteon and Stargate hardware -- all without requiring a huge grid of buttons or displays.

Development of the Luminode is very nearly done after six-plus years of work in Seattle. The hardware is fundamentally ready and just needs the Kickstarter project to finish its FCC and UL testing along with the obligatory mass production. The hope is to start delivering switches in January as well as integrate more closely with non-lighting elements in the future. Pledge levels are dictated almost exclusively by volume: $130 is what it takes to get a basic two-switch kit, $260 will add the USB adapter along with an extra switch, and successive levels scale all the way up to a 50-switch, $3,000 kit for large homes. Think Automatic has a relatively low $35,000 threshold to meet its Kickstarter funding, but it only has 13 days left to go. If you like the idea of advanced lighting that doesn't require an advanced appreciation of the user manual to understand, now's a good time to click the source link and make it happen.
