Strength Exercises Great for Seniors - In Home Health Care ...

Pittsburgh Home Care Service Holiday gatherings when Mom is still trying to play hostess after recovering from an illness and Dad is struggling to be the life of the party, even as his dementia is worsening, often highlight an older adult?s frailties more so than any other times of the year. Even families of healthy older adults could begin to see changes from year to year.

Some of what?s happening can be attributed to the effects of aging such as a loss of balance, muscle strength and flexibility. A lot of seniors deal with conditions that make standing for long hours baking and cooking more difficult. Other seniors experience an inability to recognize pain.

That?s why building back strength can be so important. I would suggest developing an individualized fitness program, if the doctor approves. Many seniors have more than one chronic condition and are dealing with osteoporosis and arthritis, which can make moving more difficult. Strength exercises can be good for arthritis sufferers, helping them strengthen their muscles to do the work again.

Many seniors also prefer exercising with other older adults ? at least that?s what those seniors who come to EngAge Wellness, located in the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, tell us. We focus on whole person wellness ? incorporating social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and vocational.

Diet is another way to help keep older adults on track. Everything in moderation, as they say.

It?s important for those who might be preparing a holiday meal to keep their senior family members? dietary needs in mind. Look for salt substitutes and ways to replace higher-fat ingredients with more healthy alternatives.

For example, some cake recipes allow replacing butter with a healthy option, such as applesauce, or using sugar substitutes or sugar-free ingredients. One popular brownie recipe even calls for using the healthy high-fiber option of black beans?just don?t tell guests what they?re eating if you think they might not find such an ingredient appetizing.

Finally, learn from your senior loved one, and his or her doctor, the warning signs that could indicate trouble. If an older adult is diabetic, watch for the signs that would mean blood sugar is too high or too low. If Mom has congestive heart failure, look for swelling in the feet and possible trouble breathing.

Exercise and wellness are just as important for busy family caregivers. I?d recommend a program for caregivers, too, along with participating in a class like Tai Chi to relieve stress. Practicing wellness leading up to and during the holidays can help make the new year brighter for both seniors and caregivers.

Afghan-US Company to Build Oil Refinery in Northern Afghanistan

News - Afghanistan

Sunday, 30 December 2012 18:26 Written by Zabihullah Jhanmal

alt

An oil refinery with an investment of $700 million will be constructed in northern Afghanistan by a joint US-Afghan company, Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA) said Sunday.

The American company, AFM Co., will help establish the facility capable of refining 60,000 barrels of oil a day when the plant opens in 2016, AISA officials said.

"Following the commencement of this company's work in Afghanistan, there will be no need to ship crude oil abroad," said Wafiullah Eftekhar, head of AISA.

The oil refinery news comes as Afghanistan Industries Union officials welcomed a 40 percent increase in tariffs on imported fruit juice to help domestic producers.

"We are optimistic towards these commitments of the government. This act will encourage [domestic] investments in the country," Shirbaz Kaminzada, Head of Afghanistan Industries Union.

The Union also asked the government to follow through on its promise to support all industrial sectors across the country.

AISA said that more industrial parks will be established in different provinces of country.

But they also demanded that the government move the military bases from the vicinity of the Pul-e-Charkhi industrial park because they pose security risks to factories.

An Afghan juice company suffered a $10 million loss after a suicide attack on a foreign military contractor located nearby.

People Undergoing Extreme Body Modifications - Fox Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC- Forget tattoos and nose piercings - more people are taking body modifications to the extreme.

"Once you are heavily modified or extremely modified... you find a whole community who are doing the same thing," said Michael Ridenhour, a Plaza Midwood resident.

For Ridenhour, it's scarification. To some, the ancient form of tribal art signifies courage or warding off evil.

"It was kind of like a walking on hot coals moment where once I sat through it, everything else becomes a little bit easier," said Ridenhour.

But pain is inevitable in procedures like corset piercings when metal rings are inserted and joined with ribbon. It's considered decorative and personal.

"It's a spirtual piercing for a woman that needed to let go of some negativity," said Corinna Arlington, owner of SADU Body Piercings & Body Modifications.

For some who get their skin stretched or get other body modifications, it's about standing out and being different.? But for others, it's beyond skin deep.

"People hang from hooks, and when you're hanging from that hook, you reach a higher level of consciousness. You almost go into a transcendental state," said Arlington.

Other extreme modifications include saline injections, forked tongues, implanted horns and elf shaped ears.

"You bring in ancient rituals with body modification into modern day American audiences so they can see things that are going on that they would have never been exposed to," said Collette Ellis.

While the underground trends grows, doctors warn the procedures can be dangerous.

"When you do this to your body, it something that potentially becomes irreversible and in a different phase of your life, that may become hurtful or very painful," said Dr. Felmont Eaves, a plastic surgeon at Charlotte Plastic Surgery.

"It's going to continue to grow and it's going to be more accepted. You're going to see more and more people in years to come," said Arlington.

Some of the extreme body modifications are illegal in North Carolina.

People often travel to other states that allow procedures with scalpels or razors to alter deeper layers of the skin.

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

(AP) ? Recalling the shooting of 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind a legislative package next year aimed at containing gun violence.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama voiced skepticism about proposals to place armed guards at schools in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 deadly assault at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

In his boldest terms yet, he vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence and said he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high capacity bullet magazines.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said. "So what I intend to do is I will call all the stakeholders together. I will meet with Republicans. I will meet with Democrats. I will talk to anybody.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids. And, yes, it's going to be hard."

Obama's comments come as the schoolroom shooting has elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention.

Six adults also died at the school. Authorities say the shooter killed himself and also killed his mother at their home.

The slayings have prompted renewed calls for greater gun controls. The National Rifle Association has resisted those efforts vociferously, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection.

"I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," Obama said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

Obama said he intended to press the issue with the public.

"Will there be resistance? Absolutely there will be resistance," he said.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away. It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Besides getting gun violence legislation passed next year, Obama also listed immigration as a top priority for 2013 as well as deficit reduction. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled back plan that avoids across the board tax increases for virtually all Americans.

He issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates for new secretary of defense.

Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Many liberals and gay activists also have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision on a secretary of defense but said called Hagel a "patriot."

"He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate," he said. "Somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam. And is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

He noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark. "And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country," Obama said.

India rape charges fail to quell protests

A young woman who died after being gang-raped and beaten on a bus in India's capital was cremated Sunday amid an outpouring of anger and grief by millions across the country demanding greater protection for women from sexual violence.

The cremation took place during a private ceremony in New Delhi soon after the woman's body arrived in the capital on a special Air India flight from Singapore, where she died at a hospital Saturday after being sent for medical treatment.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from going to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from rape victims, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts can drag on for years.

Security was tight, with no access to the public or media at the crematorium.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party, were at the airport to receive the body and meet family members of the victim who were on the flight.

Hours after the victim died early Saturday, Indian police charged six men who had been arrested in connection with the attack with murder, adding to accusations that they beat and gang-raped the woman on a New Delhi bus on Dec. 16.

New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six suspects face the death penalty if convicted, in a case that has triggered protests across India and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the victim, who has not been identified, was taken Thursday to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specializes in multi-organ transplants, but her condition worsened, with her vital signs deteriorating.

Following her death, thousands of Indians lit candles, held prayer meetings and marched through various cities and towns, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, on Saturday night to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment.

But even as thousands mourned the rape victim's death and in a sign of how pervasive such crimes are, police in West Bengal state were investigating another suspected gang-rape and death.

In the latest case, the family of a woman said she and her husband were attacked by six men as they returned home after working at a brick factory.

They dragged the woman into a nearby farm after pouring acid into her husband's mouth, the family said.

The woman was found dead with multiple injuries, said police officer Bhaskar Mukherjee, adding he was waiting for an autopsy report.

No charges have been laid. Another police officer, Sugata Sen, said four men had been detained for questioning.

The alleged attack is similar to the Dec. 16 case, where the woman and a male friend, who also has not been identified, were on a bus after watching a film when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Protesters push against police barrier

Dozens of protesters tried to break through a police cordon Sunday and march to the parliament building in the Indian capital, but were pushed back. The protesters, belonging to the student wing of main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, shouted anti-government slogans as they marched.

Hundreds of policemen have sealed off the high-security area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to parliament, the president's palace, the prime minister's office and several ministries.

Gandhi assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim's death "deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity."

Attitudes by Indians toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen as provocative.

Meanwhile, a United Nations statement said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "offers his sincerest condolences" to the victim's family and "utterly condemns this brutal crime."

"Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated," the statement said. "Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected."

Ban urged the Indian government to take steps to deter such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice, and to "strengthen critical services for rape victims," it said.

Students ignore health warnings and continue use of energy drinks

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Acting on a late-night tip, Drew McMillan bounded up to the third floor of James Madison University's Rose Library and found a black filing cabinet with a homemade sign on top: ?Test answers.?

He pulled open a drawer, revealing dozens of cans of Red Bull, a free finals-week gift from the energy company's on-campus promoters. He snapped a photo, posted it on Facebook, and tweeted: ?Is this real life??

Within minutes last week, McMillan's phone blew up with texts from friends wanting to know where the stash was. Soon, the library's tables and study rooms were dotted with Red Bull's slim trademark cans.

With finals season recently past, weary students were looking for anything that could help them endure late-night study sessions. Energy drink companies, whose products are already popular on college campuses, are increasingly looking to replace coffee as a student's go-to answer for a stamina boost during finals -- and then for late nights after graduation. As one Red Bull advertisement states: ?Nobody ever wishes they'd slept more during college.?

But this biannual marketing blitz comes amid renewed calls from lawmakers and health activists in recent months for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate such beverages more strictly, in the aftermath of several deaths that could be connected to energy drinks.

?We wouldn't survive nursing school without caffeine,? said Kelsey

Sipe, 22, a senior at JMU who mostly drinks coffee, but often adds in energy drinks. ?We tell others not to drink them, because they can increase your blood pressure, and then -- kcssshhhh! -- we open one.?

A 2008 study of undergraduates at a large public university found that 39 percent of students had consumed at least one energy drink in the past month, with considerably higher rates for males and white students. The study, funded with a National Institute on Drug Abuse grant, noted that energy drink marketing tactics are ?similar to those used to sell tobacco and alcohol to youths.?

Fifteen years ago, energy drinks barely existed. Now it's a booming industry that continues to grow. In the past year, U.S. energy drink sales totaled more than $8 billion, up more than 15 percent from a year ago, according to SymphonyIRI Group, a Chicago-based market research firm.

In that time nationwide, Red Bull sold more than a billion cans and Monster sold more than 1.2 billion, a total that would equate to more than seven cans per American. And that's just for those two leading brands.

Red Bull, which hit the country in the late 1990s, is credited with creating this industry using a Thai recipe. Today there are hundreds of energy drinks on the market, ranging from 1.93-ounce 5-Hour Energy shots to 32-ounce cans of Monster. Even Starbucks has gotten into the game, producing sparkling energy drinks and canned espresso beverages.

That proliferation has intensified debate about a long-standing question: Are energy drinks safe?

The focus of that question is often one of the main ingredients: caffeine. Energy drinks contain from 2.5 to 35.7 milligrams of caffeine per ounce; energy shots may have as much as 170 milligrams of caffeine per ounce, according to researchers.

Energy drink companies often say their products contain about the same amount of caffeine, if not less, than strongly brewed coffee. Estimates for the amount of caffeine in coffee can go as high as 30 milligrams per ounce.

The FDA limits the amount of caffeine in soft drinks to about 71 milligrams for a 12-ounce can. Energy drinks and shots are usually sold as dietary supplements or food products, which don't have a caffeine limit. And other ingredients in energy drinks touted for purported benefits -- such as taurine and ginseng -- aren't regulated by the FDA.

Studies have set different limits for the amount of caffeine an adult can handle safely, ranging from 200 to 400 milligrams a day. Consumption of more than 500 to 600 milligrams can lead to ?caffeine intoxication,? which can cause insomnia, anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, increased heart rate or muscle tremors. In rare cases, caffeine can contribute to a person's death, but experts say the stimulant alone usually isn't enough to kill healthy adults.

But for children and adolescents, more than 200 milligrams of caffeine can be dangerous, and the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against giving children energy drinks.

In December 2011, a 14-year-old girl in Hagerstown, Md., drank two 24-ounce Monster drinks she bought at a mall. The two cans combined contained at least 480 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of 14 cans of Coca-Cola or two very strong cups of coffee.

Within hours of finishing the second can, Anais Fournier went into cardiac arrest and later died. Fournier had a preexisting condition that was complicated by the change in her heartbeat caused by the caffeine, according to a lawsuit her parents filed in October.

In response to the lawsuit, Monster Beverage said in a statement: ?Neither the science nor the facts support the allegations that have been made. Monster reiterates that its products are and have always been safe.?

Fournier's death last year prompted two senators and a host of health activists to urge further FDA investigation into energy drinks. This fall the FDA disclosed that it is investigating more than 100 reports filed during the past five years of ?adverse events? possibly tied to energy drinks or shots, including at least 18 deaths.

Companies that make the drinks and supplements maintain that their products are safe.

The increased focus on energy drinks this fall has also become the topic du jour for parental lectures.

Nicholas Marsilio, a junior history major at James Madison, said his mother frequently asks whether he's drinking energy drinks -- and urges him to find a natural energy jolt from exercise or sleep.

?My parents never had energy drinks. They don't get it,? said Marsilio, 21. ?Their energy drinks were coffee at two in the morning. . . . That's definitely a generation switch.?

Marsilio said he started drinking Monster when he was in high school so he could stay up late playing video games. Then he enrolled at James Madison, a public university about two hours southwest of Washington in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. At first, Marsilio would buy cases of energy drinks. Now, he buys them one at a time from a campus dining facility, which has a contract with Coca-Cola and sells the company's energy drink brand, NOS.

?I like it,? Marsilio said, sipping a citrus-flavored NOS in James Madison's Carrier Library at 10 p.m. last week. ?It's really the taste for me.?

There are dangers for some: Experts say that chugging energy drinks, especially while working out, can reveal an unknown heart condition in an otherwise healthy young person. Low-calorie, sugar-free energy drinks are sometimes used by students with serious eating disorders. And then there's the sometimes deadly combination of energy drinks and alcohol.

In November 2010, the FDA deemed it unsafe to sell pre-mixed caffeinated alcoholic drinks, such as Four Loko, which has since removed caffeine from its products. Although drinking usually comes with the depressive effects of alcohol, energy drinks and caffeine can keep drinkers awake and alert, ready to drink more. Many bars stock energy drinks as mixers.

After the ban was imposed, a group of health researchers wrote to the FDA, telling officials that college students can still mix their own alcoholic energy drinks and urging further action.

?Energy drink use is highly prevalent,? they wrote. ?A trip to any college campus would reveal that energy drinks have become enmeshed in the subculture of partying on US college campuses.?

Energy drinks were originally marketed primarily to college students, especially athletes. Red Bull and Monster sponsor extreme sports teams and hire outgoing students to promote their products on campuses and in clubs.

McMillan, the James Madison junior who found the Red Bull trove in the library, said finals week has become an extreme sport for him.

This year he tried ?this nocturnal thing? -- sleeping during the day and studying through the night when distractions were few and Facebook was quiet. A string of Monsters and Red Bulls helped him do it.

?If I were to just stay at home and away from the library, I would probably get way more done,? he said. ?There is an ideal or an expectation that just because it's finals week, you go crazy. It's so hard not to get into it. It's almost fun. . . . You have to go to extreme measures to get stuff done.?

Date Night: Molly's in Soulard Saint Louis

If you?re looking for a cozy yet hip locale to grab some food and drink with your main squeeze, Molly?s in Soulard, St. Louis is pretty great. It?s both a bar and?restaurant (aka the ?bistro?)?within 2 separate buildings and also includes an outdoor patio area. My husband and I took the opportunity, while visiting St. Louis, to leave the kids with Nana and enjoy a night out. Molly?s in Soulard features a creole style menu inspired by?Louisiana, but not quite as overly spicy?as true Cajun food (that makes me happy!).

I loved the decor. The walls are a rich, dark red paint and the furniture is an antique black with a tin ceiling in the bistro ? gorgeous! There are accents of handmade class and days gone by throughout the place. Red velvet booth benches, period style posters and images, old brick with hints of signage from previous venues still painted right on the brick along with various chalkboards and pretty handwriting add a touch of style. Even the lighting is gorgeous.

Molly?s also regularly hosts a variety of live entertainment ? you can check out the schedule on their event calendar.

I enjoyed the entire meal.?I enjoyed the appetizer the most. It was full of yummy unexpected flavors and seemed to be cooked just perfectly. There was a creole type sauce combined with a smoked BBQ flavor along with perfectly cooked shrimp and really big fried green tomatoes. It was so good!?I started my meal with a ceasar salad while my husband had the soup. The french onion soup was rich and thick and delightful. It?s one of his favs and he thoroughly enjoyed it with the real french bread cut nice and thick and the cheese perfectly melted on top.

For our main courses, I had the eggplant parmesan and hubs had the jambalaya. While the eggplant?parmesan?was beautiful to look at and I loved the addition of cherry tomatoes in this classic dish, there?was a bit too much of it? so much cheese and sauce the eggplant was lost.?My husband really liked the jambalya. It was full of flavor, the rice was cooked perfectly and there was a nice array and quantity of meat with onions and a variety of peppers.?I don?t do spicy much, so just tasted a bite of crawfish ? yum! The servings aren?t too big, but big enough that we were stuffed before we even got to dessert. However, dessert is my fav, so we had to stay and try a bit. Although I loved the sauce, the beignets were on the tough chewy side? not the ?New Orleans? doughnut I had expected although I don?t think I?ve had a beignet before, so I had nothing to compare to. It was all tasty enough that not only would I go back, I?d try these same dishes again.

The Soulard neighborhood is pretty neat. It?s an older part of town, the streets are lined with old French style row houses that have been converted into townhomes and apartments. Over the past 10 years the area has slowly grown into a hip little community for the young professionals. You?ll find a variety of small restaurants and hangouts near Molly?s including the 1860 Game Room, right across the street.

Garamendi: Plenty of work to do in Washington, DC

December 29, 2012 11:08:00 PM

Committees:

House Armed Services Committee.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

*House Agriculture Committee.

*pending waiver to sit on three committees rather than the typical two

The new year could be one where important things get done in Washington, DC ? if Republicans in the House of Representatives let it happen, according to Rep. John Garamendi.

When the new Congress convenes this week, Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, will represent Yuba-Sutter for the first time since redistricting moved the region into his district in 2011.

After November's elections, he said, House Republicans elected in the tea party revolt of 2010 have to decide whether they want to follow the will of the voters.

"The public clearly wants us to work together," he said. "There's a big, big middle we can move to, to get things done."

On Garamendi's list is finishing a farm bill and addressing sequestration, a federal plan for cutting spending, including defense.

Though there are places military spending could be cut, he said, it's critical not to make cuts to drastically affect the mission at Beale and Travis Air Force bases, both in his district.

A new farm bill is important for Yuba-Sutter agriculture because it will have components for rice, specialty crops, ongoing research and environmental protection, Garamendi said.

"Unfortunately, we'll have to start at the beginning," he said, because a new Congress is being seated. "We'll have to have committees and hearings again."

What kind of federal budget is adopted will also be important because it will show whether the mood is toward spending money and making infrastructure investments ? such as levee improvements ? or holding back federal dollars, Garamendi said.

If there's room for Republicans to work with him, he said, it could be on issues like the farm bill and perhaps making progress on the long-discussed Sites Reservoir near Colusa.

Garamendi said he is also hoping to get more support for his Make It In America bill, which would give priority to domestic manufacturers for domestic infrastructure projects like bridges and levees.

"Republicans have picked up pieces of it, but not all of it," he said. "There's potential there."

Whether there's potential for Democrats and Republicans to work together is uncertain, but Garamendi said he plans on being cooperative.

"You always have to talk to them," he said. "They're the majority party."

Winslet wed Ned Rocknroll, the Virgin magnate?s nephew earlier this month, during a secret ceremony in New York, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Accrding to The Sun, Winslet was presented with this pricey gift after last year she helped save the tycoon?s mother from a blaze when his multi-million Carribean villa caught fire, trapping people inside.

That was the time when Kate met her future husband, Ned Rocknroll, who works part-time for Virgin Galactic.

"I'm not sure she wants to go on a one-way trip to Mars, but she wants to go into space," The Daily Telegraph quotes Richard Branson as saying.

Over 500 people, including actor Ashton Kutcher, have already purchased tickets for a space ride on the Virgin vehicle. Prominent British cosmologist Stephen Hawking also received a gift ticket to space from Branson.

The vehicle is now undergoing flight-testing at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, The Sun says.

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Aero Rebel to continue good run in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon at Romford

Aero Rebel is making up into a formidable marathon performer. After registering a couple of great long-distance wins, the black bitch is all set to strike in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon, 750 metres open race, scheduled to be held at Romford on Friday, December 28th.

Aero Rebel reached here after enjoying mixed fortune at Monmore. She performed magnificently to win a similar event on December 12th. After leaving the fifth box, she maintained the highest standards of speed and stamina. The dashing bitch always led the proceedings, taking the top prize by four and a half lengths.

P. Young?s charge was quite impressive at Wimbledon last time. The daughter of Droopys Maldini, out of Final Rose, took the honours by two and a half lengths. She established her supremacy at the sixth bend, and stayed ahead afterwards. Consequently, she captured the first rank with ease.

Among her opponents are: Avit On Bertha, Head Iton Tom, Baliff Bob, Bridge Diva, and Confey Lemon. The 750 metres race is full of big names, thus an exciting battle is on the cards. The ultimate champion will get a handsome prize of 200 pounds. The officials are due to kick off the affair at 22:40 GMT.

Back in the groove, Head Iton Tom is expected to be prominent early on. The white and fawn dog is enjoying a favourable draw. After clinching a couple of terrific wins over 575 metres, E. Gaskin?s trainee is fully pumped.

Baliff Bob lacks a look round, and this is a big concern. The brindle dog ran well in the trials at Belle Vue last week, but being equally good against this opposition is impossible.

Avit On Bertha set a new track record, when beating a star-studded line-up on December 12th. After taking a fascinating triumph, the white and black bitch lost her rhythm, and faced a shameful loss at Hove last week.

Bridge Diva is likely to be taken off her feet in the early stages. Confey Lemon appears to be punching above her weight. We wish the best of luck to all the contestants.

Miley Cyrus And Lena Dunham Show Off Their Christmas Style And More Tweets Of The Week (PHOTOS)

This week, the Twittersphere was a great place to learn some awesome tidbits about the lives of the fashionable (and the fashionably-challenged). Even though over the holidays many celebrities were hibernating (or on vacation in Mexico) they still managed to find time to tweet.

We got to see a Christmas throwback pic from Lena Dunham, and Miley Cyrus rocked a Santa beard with her pajamas (which of course are leopard print ). Thankfully, it wasn't a repeat of her "Christmas Creampies" outfit.

Take a look at the tweets below and see more of our favorite Twitter moments:

How to negotiate your remodeling contract with a general contractor ...

28Dec

www.angieslist.com ? We?ve all heard about home improvement or remodeling projects that went way past the completion date, or worse, required a second general contractor to complete the project. Homeowners can protect themselves from these scenarios by getting contracts from the service providers, and most importantly, reading the contract thoroughly and adding additional protective agreements as needed.

Newly discovered loris may be slow, but its bite is toxic

A new slow loris species was discovered in Borneo, named Nycticebus kayan.?The little primate weighs less than a pound.

By Jeanna Bryner,?LiveScience.com / December 14, 2012

The newly discovered slow loris primate (Nycticebus kayan) has a furry "face mask" distinct from other slow loris species.

A new small primate with a toxic bite and distinctive facial fur markings has been discovered in the jungles of Borneo.

The new slow loris species is found in the highlands of the island of Borneo and has been named Nycticebus kayan, after a major river, the Kayan, flowing through the region. The trio of scientists also found that two species previously considered sub-species in the Nycticebus genus are officially unique species.

"Historically, many species went unrecognized as they were falsely lumped together as one species," researcher Rachel Munds, of the University of Missouri Columbia, said in a statement.

Closely related to lemurs, the slow loris is found across Southeast Asia, from Bangladesh and China's Yunnan province to Borneo. To distinguish between species, the researchers focused on the seeming face masks of Borneo's slow lorises; fur patches cover their eyes, while their heads are covered with differently shaped caps. The examined photographs and museum samples for eight face mask features, finding there were four species of Bornean lorises. [See Photos of the Slow Loris Primates]

The new species to science, N. kayan, showed a dark, highly contrasting face mask, with dark patches around its eyes. From the specimen examined, the species is about 10.8 inches (273 millimeters) long and weighs about 14.5 ounces (411 grams). The other species include: N. menagensis, N. bancanus and N. borneanus. (N. menagensis had already been recognized as a species.)

The newly identified species illustrate the breadth of biodiversity yet to be discovered in the jungles of Borneo and nearby islands, the researchers noted. The slow lorises, as with other animals on these islands, face threats from human activity.

"The pet trade is a serious threat for slow lorises in Indonesia, and recognition of these new species raises issues regarding where to release confiscated Bornean slow lorises, as recognition by nonexperts can be difficult," said study researcher Anna Nekaris, of Oxford Brookes University in England, in a statement.

Munds, Nekaris and co-author Susan Ford of Southern Illinois University also note this week in the American Journal of Primatology that their results confirm the use of fur color and pattern as a valid way of distinguishing between species of small primates. Some researchers, they wrote, had claimed that because Bornean slow lorises are not a diverse group because they share similar cranial features and all are lacking an upper second incisor. The new study suggests otherwise, the team added.

Consumers, businesses brace for 'fiscal cliff' impact

18 hrs.

For much of this year, business managers have blamed uncertainties over the looming ?fiscal cliff? for their reluctance to pick up the pace of new hiring. ?

As the budget?deadline nears with no deal in sight, we may be about to find out just justified those fears are.

Without a deal, the current budget law calls for a half-trillion-dollar package of tax hikes and spending cuts that most forecasters warn would, if left in force for long, send the U.S. economy back into recession.

Reid: Fiscal cliff failure looks likely, blames Boehner for 'dictatorship'

After strong gains in income in November, American households will see their paychecks shrink a bit when a two-year payroll tax "holiday" expires Dec. 31. The new rate will clip?2 percent from?every dollar of wage income, or?about $20 a week for someone making the median salary of?$50,000 a?year. ?

?People will start to feel it fairly quickly in their paychecks,? said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at Pantheon Macroeconomic Advisers.??I don't think the economy will fall apart completely (in the short term). But we?ve seen already that business confidence is weakening and consumer confidence is weakening. So the uncertainty is a problem.?

Small business owners are especially negative. Just five percent of them plan on adding new jobs, according to the latest monthly survey of its members by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Only 19 percent said they plan to invest in new equipment in the next three to six months.

The business gloom does not bode well for the U.S. economy, which already faces weak conditions on several other fronts. Export growth is slowing as a?European recession and a?slowdown in China weigh on global demand for American products and services. Growth in government spending likely will slow ? whether or not a budget deal is reached to avoid the deeper cuts already set to kick in. That leaves spending by business and consumers to keep the economy afloat.

It remains to be seen whether businesses are holding back because of the ongoing budget battle. An alternative explanation is that business owners are hoping their can maximize profits by spending less and hiring fewer full-time?workers, instead?making do with temporary or part-time workers more or less indefinitely.

?That means more temporary workers, less investment in the future, lower productivity gains and a lower growth rate in the future,? said UBS economist Drew Matus. ?That?s a worst case scenario. So we all better hopes it?s the fiscal cliff causing some of these people to hold back.?

Though hiring picked up in the second half of this year, the overall pace is far lower than typically seen more than three years into an economic recovery. Since the 2007 recession ended, the number of part-time workers who can?t get full-time work has been stuck at double the level seen when the downturn began. ?

The spectacle of political dysfunction is likely to keep business managers in a sour mood for some?time.?

Though the new package of tax hikes and federal spending cuts is set to begin Jan. 1, the impact of those new measures will be felt gradually. Tax hikes will be spread over a full year. Some government?agencies may postpone spending cuts in?hopes that they'll be reversed before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30. ?

More worrisome is the pending fight over raising the debt ceiling, which will exhaust the government?s borrowing authority in February.

Unless lawmakers agree to extend it, the Treasury faces the same threat of default that threw the budget process into chaos?in July 2011 and cost the U.S. its Triple-A credit rating. The three major bond rating agencies have already warned that failure to reach a credible deal to contain federal budgets deficits could bring yet another downgrade.

US Treasury to take steps to avoid hitting debt ceiling

The best case scenario has Congress returning in January to enact a compromise agreement that President Barack?Obama signs into law, lifting the pall over business and consumers and sparking a fresh spurt of economic growth.

?That?s sort of what happened last summer when we had the debt ceiling fiasco,? said Sheperdson. ?Things rebounded fairly quickly. But while the negotiations were going on, payroll growth rolled over. And I?m nervous that we could get something similar this time.?

Until the budget fiasco is resolved, with businesses sitting on their hands, consumers remain the last best hope to keep the economy afloat. ?

?The consumer has really been holding things up,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. ?Whether its retail sales, whether it's motor vehicle sales and even the biggest sales of all, housing, the consumer has been out there.?

Though wages have remained nearly flat since the recession ended, U.S. households have continued to pay down debt. Record lower interest rates have sparked a wave of refinanced mortgages that have plowed billions of dollars back into household budgets.

But the protracted display of Congressional incompetence may already be weighing on consumer spending, which accounts for 70 cents of every dollar of gross domestic product. ?On Friday, the latest read on consumer confidence, from a monthly Thompson Reuters/University of Michigan survey, showed that consumer sentiment fell sharply in December. ?A private survey, released Monday, similarly showed confidence getting eroded by fiscal cliff worries.

Without a budget deal, higher taxes will crimp consumers? spending power ? but only gradually. That?s why many economists believe the fiscal cliff is really more a like a slope.

Naroff likens the budget deadline to a snowball that will be released Jan. 1, picking up size and force as it continues to roll down the hill.

?To me the biggest uncertainty in all of this ? and for which we don?t have any estimates - is what happens to confidence?? he said. ?If consumers say, ?Hey, this thing is really getting very bad, Congress doesn't know what it is doing. ?I'm cutting back.? then we could have the snowball hit on consumer spending - with weakness in the business side. And then you have a real problem.?

Email Advertising Ideas for the End of 2012 | Business 2 Community

Between Christmas, New Year?s, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the winter solstice, and other holidays at this time of the season, now is a good time to celebrate and enjoy this time of year.

Many companies and organizations send out emails to their customers, staff, and subscribers around this time of year. So whether you want to run email advertisements on other people?s emails, or to get email advertising to run on your emails, there are a plethora of opportunities this holiday season. Here are a few of them:

Emails wishing everybody a happy holiday season

Most businesses and organizations send out some sort of holiday email to their email list at this time of year. Whether you are running an ad in the email for another business, or purchasing ads in someone else?s email, make sure that the ad is also holiday-themed, and not too obtrusive. It should be more about class instead of crass.

Year in review email

You can talk about what you learned this year, or review some of your year?s top highlights. This works well if you have a newsletter which is about a particular fanbase. For example, if you had a San Francisco Giants fan-oriented newsletter, you could review the top moments of the 2012 World Championship team.

Shopping deals

The holiday season means shopping, so if you have a shopping business, now is a great time to either buy sales ads in other newsletters to target customers, or run ads in your own newsletter for those offering shopping deals. Post-Christmas shopping deals are of particular interest.

Holiday party invitations

Perhaps you have companies who are helping with planning or running your office holiday party. This could be caterers, bartenders, etc. One great way to potentially get a bit of a discount on their rates is to run an ad in your holiday party invitation for your company. This could go in the email inviting your, business clients and staff to the shindig.

Another potential idea is for you to run an ad in somebody else?s party email advertising your own services. If you can have some sort of holiday-themed email as well, that would work great.

Games sent to customers

In addition to holiday emails and party invites, some companies, particularly creative ones like those in advertising, come up with games in emails that they send to their customers and clients. These time-wasting games, which have some sort of technology like Flash, can be lots of fun ? and addictive. If you run an ad in one of these emails, you have the potential of your ad being shared with other people if the game is so much fun that it gets shared with others. If you are selling an email advertisement in the games email, the potential stickiness of the email could be a selling point.

Fitness Nutrition Guidelines | Leisure Fitness Equipment

Fitness Nutrition Guidelines
Article by about.com, Recommended by Michael Brohawn, Wellness Outreach Team

What we need to know now for good fitness nutrition is what we need to obtain from our food. Our food is made up of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (as well as vitamins, minerals, and the like). Much debate has been heard on what the right amount of each of these components we need, but most of those diets are making the assumption that you are sedentary. For runners, a good healthy diet is made of approximately 50-55 percent carbs, 15-20 protein, and 30 fat. Unfortunately as with calories, you can?t just eat the right amount, but you also have to eat the right kind.

Let?s look at each individual component.

Carbohydrates convert in our body to glucose. Glucose is used by the body for energy or stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen, which is used later for energy. So carbs provide energy. However, our ability to store carbs as glycogen is limited, so we need to replenish often instead of gorge ourselves once or twice a day. When glycogen stores are depleted, you will feel fatigue and have difficulty keeping up with the original pace of your run. Carb-heavy foods also provide nutrients that are essential for our good health. Fruits and vegetables contain over 500 kinds of phytochemicals, which protect against cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and wrinkles. Variety is the key to getting the nutrients you need most.

Carbs should make up about 50 of your diet. This should primarily be from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Simple carbs, like sugar, honey, and GU should make up no more than 10 of your daily diet. A good way to know you are getting the right amount is to eat about 10 servings of grains, 7 servings of fruit, 4 of vegetables per day. (Remember, a serving of grains is 1 piece of bread, a serving of fruit is 6 oz of orange juice, etc. The amount of mashed potatoes you?d get at many restaurants would be enough for your 4 vegetables a day.)

Protein builds muscles and tendons, repairs broken down muscles, and regulates hormones. Every part of our bodies are made of protein. The muscles, bones, blood, immune cells, tendons, ligaments, skin, and hair all are made of protein. Runners need more protein than sedentary people because we have more need for muscle repair and recovery, which is protein?s biggest job. Because of this, a deficiency of protein causes fatigue and slow recovery. To get an adequate amount of protein each day, we should consume approximately 5-6 ounces of lean meat (notice: ounces not servings, and lean meat, not greasy hamburgers) or 2-3 servings of soy per day. Having 3 servings of lowfat dairy products should help with your protein as well; if you don?t consume dairy, you should replace it with a calcium-dense fruit or vegetable or more soy servings.

Eating a very lowfat diet is just as bad as eating a very high fat diet. Lowfat diets contribute to moodiness and depression. As runners, our bodies need fat. Fat helps us feel full. A deficiency of omega-3 fats (found in fatty fish and flaxseed oil) leads to higher risk of heart disease and arthritis. While a diet rich in monounsaturated fats cuts cholesterol and heart disease risks.

Trans fat, the worst of the fats, raises LDL, bad cholesterol, and lowers HDL, good cholesterol. Saturated fat, still a net bad fat, raises both HDL and LDL. But our bodies do need saturated fat in small amounts. You don?t have to try to get saturated fat though, it will find you. Saturated fat is found in whole milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, red meat, chocolate, and coconut products. Trans fat is found in most margarines, fast foods, and vegetable shortening. It is also found in many many prepackaged, processed foods. You should try to avoid processed foods such as chips and crackers, fried foods especially those that have been deep-fried, and baked goods listing ?partially hydrogenated vegetable oil?. Saturated fat should not be more than 10 of your diet. Trans fat should be kept to the smallest amount possible.

Polyunsaturated fat lowers LDL, which is bad cholesterol, and raises HDL, which is good cholesterol. Polyunsaturated fat is found in corn, soybean, safflower, and cottonseed oil, as well as in fish. Omega-3 fats are polyunsaturated fats.
Monounsaturated Fat

Monounsaturated fat also lowers LDL levels and raises HDL levels. Monounsaturated fats may also reduce risk for several kinds of cancer. It is found in olives, olive and canola oil, avocados, and nuts.
