Summer melt season is getting longer on the Antarctic Peninsula

New research from the Antarctic Peninsula shows that the summer melt season has been getting longer over the last 60 years. Increased summer melting has been linked to the rapid break-up of ice shelves in the area and rising sea level.

The Antarctic Peninsula ? a mountainous region extending northwards towards South America ? is warming much faster than the rest of Antarctica. Temperatures have risen by up to 3 oC since the 1950s ? three times more than the global average. This is a result of a strengthening of local westerly winds, causing warmer air from the sea to be pushed up and over the peninsula. In contrast to much of the rest of Antarctica, summer temperatures are high enough for snow to melt.

This summer melting may have important effects. Meltwater may enlarge cracks in floating ice shelves which can contribute to their retreat or collapse. As a result, the speed at which glaciers flow towards the sea will be increased. Also, melting and refreezing causes snow layers to become thinner and more dense, affecting the height of the snow surface above sea level. Scientists need to know this so they can interpret satellite data correctly.

Dr Nick Barrand, who carried out the research while working for the British Antarctic Survey, led an analysis of data from 30 weather stations on the peninsula. "We found a significant increase in the length of the melting season at most of the stations with the longest temperature records" he says. "At one station the average length of the melt season almost doubled between 1948 and 2011."

To build up a more complete picture across the whole peninsula, the team (funded by the European Union's ice2sea programme) also analysed satellite data collected by an instrument called a scatterometer. Using microwave reflections from the ice sheet surface, the scatterometer was able to detect the presence of meltwater. The team were able to produce maps of how the melt season varied from 1999 to 2009, and showed that several major ice shelf breakup events coincided with longer than usual melt seasons. This supports the theory that enlargement of cracks by meltwater is the main mechanism for ice shelf weakening and collapse.

The researchers also compared data from both the satellite and weather stations with the output of a state-of-the-art regional climate model.

Dr Barrand, who now works at the University of Birmingham, says, "We found that the model was very good at reproducing the pattern and timing of the melt, and changes in melting between years. This increases confidence in the use of climate models to predict future changes to snow and ice cover in the Antarctic Peninsula."

'Judge Joe Brown' canceled after 15 years

"Judge Joe Brown," the second highest-rated court show in television syndication after "Judge Judy," has been canceled by CBS Television Distribution.

?We would like to thank Joe for 15 great years,? CTD said in a statement, ?as well as executive producer John Terenzio and the entire staff for all their hard work and dedication to the show."

The cancellation comes after negotiations on a new contract broke down, apparently over Brown?s salary. He reportedly has been making $20 million a year, but CTD was looking to trim his compensation in line with a decline in his ratings.

In the recent February sweeps, "Judge Brown" had a 2.5 household rating, down 17 percent from the prior February. He attracted an average of 3.4 million daily viewers, down from an average of 4.1 million last February. In the key demographic for a daytime show, which is women 25-54, Brown had a 1.1 rating, down 15 percent from a year earlier.

The most recent week for national ratings, reported Tuesday, had "Judge Brown" pulling a 2.1 household rating, down 16 percent from the prior week and 19 percent from the same week a year ago.

To be fair, all of the court shows have seen declines of as much as 20 percent this season -- with the exception of "Judge Judy" who remains number one by a wide margin. She averaged a 7.5 household rating in February, about 10.5 million viewers a day.

"Judge Brown" has been second to "Judge Judy" in the ratings for the past 739 weeks, and both are distributed by CTD. But the decline in his ratings have hurt what they can charge for advertising, so CTD wanted to pare his salary, says sources.

"Judge Brown" plays on the Fox owned TV stations in many major markets and on stations owned by Sinclair, Lin and others. CTD had discussions with Fox about replacing "Judge Brown" with a new show that would be fronted by Indiana Judge Geoffrey Gaither, but Fox declined to make the swap.

At this point, "Judge Brown" is scheduled to run in original and repeat episodes on the Fox owned stations until September, when they will have the opportunity to reprogram his time periods.

"Judge Brown" may not be done yet. He has met with Byron Allen of Entertainment Studios about continuing his show. Allen?s Entertainment Studios has a line up of court shows that includes "America?s Court with Judge Ross," "We The People With Gloria Allred" and "Justice for All with Judge Christna Perez." Allen?s shows play in syndication first and then play on a company owned digital cable channel. However, it appears unlikely Entertainment Studios could pay as much as Brown has been getting under his CTD pact, according to a source.

"Judge Brown first" went on the air in 1998. Before that, he was a real life criminal courts judge in Shelby County, Tennessee. He started his career as a lawyer and was the first African American prosecutor in Memphis, Tennessee earlier in his career.

Brown won fame when as the real judge in Shelby County, Tennessee, he presided over the appeal of James Earl Ray, who murdered Martin Luther King Jr. Brown was later removed from that case over charges of bias but by then he had caught the eye of the same producers and distributors behind "Judge Judy."

Both Judge Brown and Judge Judy are produced in the same Hollywood facility, with courtrooms adjacent to each other. Both are produced by Big Ticket Television, a division of CBS, and distributed by CBS?s CTD.

Brown wasn?t the first African American to be a TV judge but he has become the longest running.

'Journey' sweeps Game Developers Choice Awards

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? "Journey" arrived on top at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

The artsy video game developed by thatgamecompany swept the 13th annual ceremony Wednesday with six wins, including game of the year and the innovation award. "Journey" was also honored for best audio, game design, visual arts and as best downloadable game.

"I really think the success of 'Journey' is because we're standing on the shoulder of the giants," said "Journey" designer and thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen.

The wordless but emotional downloadable PlayStation 3 game casts players as a mysterious scarfed figure that must trek across a desert, through temples and toward a towering mountain. Other players appear online in the game, but they aren't able to communicate with words or sound.

"If you've played the game, you can imagine how difficult it was for the team to go through it," said Chen. "Particularly at the mountain, right before the end. It was very, very stressful. I actually had to go see a psychiatrist."

Selected by a jury of game creators, the Game Developers Choice Awards honor the best games of the past year.

Other winners at the Moscone Convention Center ceremony included Ubisoft's island shoot-'em-up "Far Cry 3" for best technology, Telltale Games' interactive zombie drama "The Walking Dead" for best narrative, Fireproof Studios' puzzler "The Room" for best handheld/mobile game. Arkane Studios' stealthy revenge tale "Dishonored" won the inaugural audience award, which was chosen by online votes.

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, masterminds of such seminal role-playing games as "Baldur's Gate," ''Knights of the Old Republic" and "Mass Effect," were honored with the lifetime achievement award.

"Spacewar!" developer Steve "Slug" Russell received the pioneer award for his contribution to video games. Russell's "Spacewar!" was created in 1962 and is considered to be among the first digital computer games.

Chris Melissinos, creator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's "The Art of Video Games" exhibit, was presented with the ambassador award, which recognizes individuals who have helped advanced the gaming industry.

"Thank you to all the game creators who have provided me with a lifetime of inspiration," Melissinos said while accepting his trophy. "You've had a much larger impact on the world than you may believe."

Stocks slide, following European markets lower

NEW YORK (AP) ? Worries about Europe weighed on the stock market Wednesday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average had its biggest gain in three weeks.

Investors are watching to see if Cyprus can restore confidence in its banking system. They are also keeping an eye on Italy, where political parties are struggling to form a new government in the eurozone's third-largest economy.

The Dow was down 38 points, or 0.3 percent, at 14,522 with an hour left in the trading day. It had lost as many as 120 points in morning trading before climbing back.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped one point to 1,562, just three points short of its all-time high.

Bad news out of Europe and good news from the U.S. have tossed the stock market around over the past week. "There are still plenty of worries about (Europe's) banking system," said J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade. "But the U.S. really is on a nice little roll."

Kinahan said he thinks the S&P 500 will recover its losses and could make another run at the all-time high on Thursday.

Cyprus is working out details for how to reopen its banks on Thursday after a nearly two-week shutdown. An international bailout agreement calls for money from large depositors to be used to help pay for the rescue of its banking system.

In Italy, a center-left party failed in its attempt to form a new government. The political stalemate has raised concerns that the country will be able to manage its deep debts, undermining confidence in the euro.

Those worries hit Europe's bond markets especially hard. Borrowing rates for Italy and Spain shot higher, a sign of weaker confidence in their financial health. Rates for Germany and France, two of Europe's more stable countries, sank as traders shifted money into their bonds.

News about Italy also helped drive traders into the safety of U.S. government bonds, pushing benchmark yields to their lowest level this month. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note dropped to 1.85 percent, a steep fall from 1.91 percent late Tuesday.

In other trading, seven of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index fell. Two groups that investors tend to buy when they want to play it safe, utilities and health care, made slight gains.

The Nasdaq composite inched up one point to 3,253.

The S&P 500 closed within two points of its all-time high of 1,565 on Tuesday, helped by rising home prices and orders for manufactured goods. The stock index hit that peak on Oct. 9, 2007, before the Great Recession and a financial crisis roiled financial markets.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Cliffs Natural Resources, an iron ore mining company, plunged 15 percent, the biggest loss in the S&P 500. Analysts warned that falling iron ore prices would likely sink the company's stock. Cliffs fell $3.14 to $18.29.

? Science Applications International Corp. surged 5 percent after the security and communications technology provider reported a fourth-quarter profit that was better than analysts were expecting. SAIC also announced a special dividend of $1 per share. Its stock gained 58 cents to $13.40.

The cars are station wagons and small sedans, the campervans are 2 and 3 berth vans and the motorhomes are sub-hired from a 3rd party.

Their range of campervans is broad enough to cater for a couple of different price ranges within the budget model, but in general, they are aimed at people looking for a cheap vehicle rather than luxury. The "Chubby", going out for approx $40 per day, is at the cheaper end of the scale, through to their "Deluxe" going out for around $60. And whilst they rent motorhomes, they really only sub-hire them from another company. It is definitely worth checking prices with Travellers-Autobarn for motorhomes, but you will also want to get prices from other suppliers.

The "Chubby" budget van, is based on the Mitsubishi express, as are most budget models in the Australian market. Each Chubby is individually painted for a sense of creativity and uniqueness. The age range is of the vehicles is 3-4 years and the fittings are pretty much industry standard: sleeps 2, esky (ice cooler) for cold storage, kitchenette sink, food storage at the back and cooking with the rear door up. There are a handful of companies that are adding awnings/tents to the back door to protect you from the elements whilst cooking, the Chubby is one of these. The "easy to assemble" awning comes standard with the hire and can save you getting wet if you have to cook whilst it is raining. Overall, the awning is the main thing setting this vehicle apart from its closest competitors as there is very little difference between them otherwise. One final thing to note though is that they have a headphone jack in the CD player to plug in your iPod. These are excruciatingly rare so keep that in mind if the music you listen to in your travels is high on importance agenda.

The Hi Top is the next price level up at around $50pd. This model is for those that want a little more room and a little more luxury. Seating and sleeping 3, the Hi Top allows for sleeping "upstairs" and "downstairs" - 1 up and 2 down. Great if you have a child or friend coming along. Cooking facilities allow for entirely inside cooking and it comes with a fridge and a microwave. The microwave will only run when connected to mains power like when camped a caravan park or similar. The fridge is dual power so will run on the house battery and the mains. Like nearly all budget campervans for hire, it is a manual gear vehicle (stick shift), so if you can't drive one of those, you will have to move up a price range or 2. The beauty of the Hi-Top is that you can stand upright in the vehicle. On longer trips, or for taller people, this is a fantastic option. It also allows for extra storage in the area above the drivers head. Never fear though, this vehicle already has plenty of cupboard space inside. The downside of the Hi-Top is that the extra height causes extra drag on the vehicle and the fuel economy is reduced. If doing a super long journey, this will have some impact on fuel bills. Also, you have to try and remember that you have a very high roof and not smash it in to things like undercover park park roofs and low signs.

The top of the line campervan from Travellers-Autobarn is the Hi-Top deluxe at around $60pd. The difference between the normal and deluxe Hi-Top is the newness. The deluxe vehicles are newer and hence have overall less wear and tear. The fittings and upholstery are nicer and any recent design improvements are going to be found in these vehicles. One new design element is the slide out bench that pops out through the side door, but that is hardly a deal maker. Generally, there are more lights, prettier laminate on the cupboards, thicker cushions and even carpet on the ceiling but overall design of the vehicle is the same as the normal Hi-Top. So if you like a little more "pamper" on your journeys, this is the one for you. Stupidly, if you want to be able to play your iPod, you will have to rent the Chubby, because you can't plug in to the hi-tech AM/FM radio.

What you are best off doing is buying one of those little local transmitters that plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket and broadcasts your iPod to the FM radio.

Remember, if hiring a campervan in Australia, to drive on the left and that you are most likely to hit a rogue kangaroo on the roads at dawn and dusk - so slow down in those times.

Lazaridis to keep BlackBerry stake, focus on new venture

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis said on Thursday he has no plans to sell his stake in the smartphone maker even as he steps down from the board to focus on a new quantum computing investment fund.

BlackBerry, formerly Research In Motion, announced the former co-CEO's departure from the board on Thursday as it reported its first quarterly earnings since launching its make-or-break new BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

"I'm really proud of what we built together at RIM, and I believe I'm leaving it in good hands, and remain one of its largest shareholders," said Lazaridis in an interview.

Asked whether he will hold on to that investment, Lazaridis said he has no plans to do otherwise. He owns 5.7 percent of the Waterloo, Ontario-based company, according to Thomson Reuters data from December 31, 2012.

Lazaridis, a silver-haired engineer who was born in Turkey, immigrated to Canada with his Greek parents as a child, and attended university in Waterloo, where he co-founded RIM in 1984.

Lazaridis also offered new details on his exit from the executive suite - he and co-CEO Jim Balsillie stepped down in January 2012, as the company bled market share to Apple Inc's iPhone and phones based on Google Inc's Android operating system, and its BlackBerry 10 ran behind schedule.

Lazaridis said he went to the board that month and asked them to make Thorsten Heins chief executive.

"I was asked to reconsider my decision to give up the CEO post, but I promised the board that I would assist Thorsten and his team in the completion of the development of BB10," he said. "I believe I've now fulfilled my commitment to the board."

Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, RIM's co-founder, announced their new $100 million Quantum Valley Investments fund earlier this month.

Those who do time-consuming calculations have for years longed for quantum computers, which could theoretically complete tasks many orders of magnitude faster than a conventional machine by tapping some peculiar properties of matter to do many calculations simultaneously.

Lazaridis, a physics buff who used some of his fortune to found the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, said he sees the quantum computing field "producing opportunities in the near-term." He said the fund has started making investments, but gave no details.

"This is ground-breaking work," he said. "We have the resources to put us in a position to help them fulfill the potential of these breakthroughs."

New model predicts hospital readmission risk

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Hospital readmissions are a costly problem for patients and for the United States health care system with studies showing nearly 20 percent of Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge at an annual cost of $17 billion. Preventing avoidable readmissions could result in improved patient care and significant cost savings. In a new model developed at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), researchers help clinicians identify which medical patients are at the greatest risk for potentially avoidable hospital readmissions so extra steps can be taken to keep those patients healthy and out of the hospital.

The model is published in the March 25, 2013 online edition of JAMA Internal Medicine.

"The strength of this model is its simplicity," said Jacques Donz?, MD, MSc, a research associate in the Department of Medicine at BWH and co-creator of the model. "We have identified seven important variables that a physician can easily run through at a patient's bedside prior to discharge. If a patient is determined to be at high-risk for readmission, a return trip to the hospital could be prevented by providing additional interventions such as a home visit by a nurse or pharmacist consultation.

The seven independent factors, which were discovered over the course of three years of research, include:

• Hemoglobin level at discharge
• Sodium level at discharge
• Whether or not the patient is being discharged from an oncology service
• Whether or not non-surgical patients had a procedure during their hospital stay
• Whether or not the hospital admission was elective
• The number of times the patient has been admitted to the hospital during the last year

The more of these risk factors a patient has, the greater the risk of readmission.

"This model can be a valuable tool in the national effort to reduce health care costs and improve the quality of care," said Jeffrey Schnipper, MD, MPH, the director of clinical research for the BWH hospitalist service and a co-creator of the model. "Identifying patients who at least have the potential to benefit from more intensive transitional interventions is an important first step in reducing hospital readmissions."

Researchers stress that this model predicts the risk of potentially avoidable readmission, and that no prediction model will be a perfect indicator of preventable hospital readmission. Because the model was created and validated at one hospital, a multi-center international validation of the model is now underway.

Erdogan: No quick restoration of ties with Israel

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested "normalization" of ties with Israel would take time, hinting that Turkey wanted to ensure the victims of a flotilla raid were compensated and Israel remained committed to the easing of restrictions of goods to Gaza before relations are restored between the two nations.

Erdogan's comments on Sunday came days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Turkish leader to apologize for the botched raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla in 2010 that killed eight Turks and one Turkish-American. Erdogan accepted the apology and both leaders said they would begin the work of restoring full relations.

But in a public address Sunday, Erdogan suggested there would be no quick restoration of ties.

"We have said: 'an apology will be made, compensation will be paid and the blockade on Palestine will be lifted. There will be no normalization without these," he said. "Normalization will happen the moment there is an implementation. But if there is no implementation, then I am sorry."

The statement was largely seen as effort to ease concerns of his religious and pro-Palestinian support base. Erdogan has won praise both at home and the Arab world for his criticism of Israel and for breaking off ties with the Jewish state over the flotilla raid.

Turkey and Israel were once strong allies but relations began to decline after Erdogan, whose party has roots in Turkey's Islamist movement, became prime minister in 2003. Erdogan has embarked on a campaign to make Turkey a regional powerhouse in an attempt to become a leading voice in the Muslim world, distanced from Israel.

Animosity increased after the flotilla incident and ambassadors were later withdrawn. Netanyahu had previously refused to apologize, saying Israeli soldiers acted in self-defense after being attacked by activists.

Israel lifted most restrictions on the import of goods into Gaza following the flotilla incident and only restrictions on some construction materials and most exports remain in effect.

During Friday's conversation between the two leaders, Netanyahu said Israel had substantially lifted the restrictions on the entry of civilian goods into Gaza and the Palestinian territories and this would continue as long as "calm prevailed."?

But Israeli military officials have taken to punishing Gaza residents for breaches of a November truce. Since Thursday, in response to militant rocket fire from the territory, all movement through a civilian crossing between Gaza and Israel was cancelled, except for humanitarian cases. Gaza fishermen had their permitted fishing territory restricted and a commercial goods-crossing was shut down, according to Israeli rights group, Gisha.

An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the restrictions.

Netanyahu said Saturday concerns over Syria's chemical weapons stockpile were the motivating factor in restoring ties with Turkey. He said the two countries, which border Syria, needed to communicate with each other over the issue.

Israeli President Shimon Peres said Sunday he would be willing to shake hands with his Turkish counterpart "soon," saying friendly ties were in both countries' interest.

"I can think of a thousand reasons why Turkey and Israel should be friends. I cannot find one reason why they shouldn't be friends," Peres said in an interview with Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper. His comments were provided by Peres' office.

He said Israel's real threat is a nuclear Iran. "Turkey and Iran are like day and night," he said.

Responding to a longstanding Turkish demand that Israel rid itself of its suspected nuclear weapons, Peres hinted at the existence of nuclear weapons in the country, which Israel has never officially confirmed.

"Once the Middle East will be free from threat, there won't be any need for nuclear weapons. Israel is a country which is being threatened with destruction. Turkey is a country nobody is threatening," Peres said.

Meanwhile, Erdogan said he plans to travel to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank "within the month, in April."

Acoustic monitoring of Atlantic cod reveals clues to spawning behavior

Mar. 22, 2013 ? For decades researchers have recorded sounds from whales and other marine mammals, using a variety of methods including passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to better understand how these animals use sound to interact with each other and with the environment. Now, for the first time, researchers report using this technology to record spawning cod in the wild.

Acoustic behavior in cod has been of interest for several decades, but few studies have observed their use of sound as part of reproductive behavior. Although both sexes produce low frequency "grunts," only male Atlantic cod make this sound during spawning season.

Researchers from NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and their colleagues from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), School of Marine Science & Technology at UMass Dartmouth (SMAST), and Cornell University's Bioacoustics Research Program recently reported their findings, online, in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.

"Few current coastal cod spawning sites are known, especially given historical data that indicate many cod spawning sites once existed along the New England coast. Passive acoustics makes locating potential sites much easier." said study co-author Sofie Van Parijs, who heads the passive acoustics group at NOAA Fisheries' Woods Hole Laboratory.

The findings have implications for conservation and management of this iconic species and possibly for other recreational and commercial fish species. Species in more than 100 families of fish are known to produce sounds. The cod family contains several sound-producing species, including haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), pollock (Pollachius virens) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

The researchers report on a 2011 pilot study in northern Massachusetts Bay. A single marine autonomous recording unit (MARU) was deployed at a depth of 51 meters (168 feet) within a seasonal fishery closure area established to protect a coastal cod spawning aggregation.

The MARU recorded continuously for 75 days during the spring spawning season, with the acoustic sounds confirmed as cod grunts. Cod were also captured in the vicinity of the MARU as part of a tagging study being conducted concurrenty at that time by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) confirming that cod were present.

Male cod grunts were recorded on 98 percent of the recording days. The grunts, were most often heard during daylight hours, and were most common in late May and early June. The MARU was deployed from April 14 through June 27

"We acoustically captured the start of the 2011 spawning period but not the end," said Van Parijs. "Future deployments of multiple MARUs over larger areas and in conjunction with tagging studies could help determine movement patterns of cod in the spring, and give a better picture of how cod are distributed within the spawning protection area. In addition, underwater cameras could provide insight into the structure of the spawning aggregation."

Atlantic cod are known to gather in high concentrations in very small areas to spawn, sometimes forming vertical columns or "haystacks." They often return to the same location to spawn, a behavior known as spawning site fidelity.

In the spring of 2012, the researchers deployed an array of nine MARUs in the same area as the 2011 pilot study to record cod acoustics through an entire spawning season and over a larger area.

Lead study author Keith Hernandez, formerly a researcher in Van Parijs' group at NEFSC and now a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California, says human-produced sounds might mask cod grunts in coastal areas with high human activity, an issue of concern since grunts and other sounds can be used to advertise for females and warn off competitors.

The next steps for passive acoustic monitoring are to explore the size and extent of known cod aggregations, and to locate other spawning aggregations in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank region. Researchers also need to determine if the grunt data can be used to develop an index of relative cod abundance.

"We're already looking at the acoustic data we've collected from other projects in the region, including the Ocean Noise Budget in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and other offshore monitoring studies," said Van Parijs. "We continue to work with colleagues at the Mass DMF, whose cod tagging studies contribute core information and complement federal efforts."

The study was funded by NOAA's Ocean Acoustics Program.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Back and forth went Marquette and Butler, trading makes and misses in an intense rematch that made a case for being the best game so far of this NCAA tournament.

In the end, Vander Blue and the Golden Eagles pulled out another nail-biter as the Bulldogs couldn't muster any more of their March magic.

Blue scored 19 second-half points to rally third-seeded Marquette out of another hole, and the Golden Eagles survived 74-72 on Saturday to reach the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

"I know everybody in our team, we weren't ready to go home," said Blue, who made a last-second layup to win Marquette's first game of this tournament. "We had two close games ? we had a lot of those this year. What we went through earlier this year prepared us for this weekend."

Like November's first meeting between the teams at the Maui Invitational, won 72-71 by Butler on Rotnei Clarke's buzzer-beating 3-pointer, it came down to the final shot. Only this time, Butler missed.

"The difference in the game was the level of pressure they put on us in the second half and certainly the shots they made," Butler coach Brad Stevens said. "They had a few I didn't think were going in that bounced in.

"Our guys gave great effort on both ends of the floor. Our guys played their hearts out. I told them they had nothing to be ashamed about."

Marquette (25-8) will meet the winner of Sunday's game between Illinois and Miami on Thursday in the East Regional semifinals at Washington, D.C.

"We could have easily been beat by Davidson," Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. "We could easily have been beaten tonight. Our character, toughness and the resiliency of our guys is maybe unlike any team I've ever been around. I stand at attention and respect for how those kids are...

"It's just another Marquette game. We're not good enough to blow anybody out. We're just good enough to get blown out. And if we can turn it into a fight and make it ugly, then it probably trends toward it helps us the most."

It will be Marquette's third consecutive round of 16 appearance, but the Golden Eagles are seeking to move past that round for the first time since 2003, when Dwyane Wade led them to the Final Four.

"There were multiple times we could have gave up," said Blue, who finished with 29 points. "But there's something about this group. We're relentless and we want to win. We're not ready to go home yet."

Clarke's 24 points led Butler (28-9).

Blue led the Golden Eagles' rally from a 35-27 halftime deficit and tied the game at 69 on 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining.

That set the stage for more late-game drama by his teammates.

After Jamil Wilson's two free throws made it 71-69, Davante Gardner deflected Clarke's pass intended for Kellen Dunham underneath and then made the first of three late free throws for 74-70 lead with 4.7 seconds left.

After Wilson's goaltend on what would have been a layup by Andrew Smith cut the lead to two 2 seconds later, Blue almost became the goat by throwing away the inbounds pass intended for Wilson with 2.9 seconds left.

The Bulldogs, who seem to win every close game at this time of year, couldn't get a good last look. Smith took an off-balance 3 from up top that was way off, slamming into the backboard and setting off another Marquette celebration.

"We were trying to get a look for a 3," Butler guard Alex Barlow said the final shot. "If that wasn't open, we had options off of that. Marquette did a great job guarding it and unfortunately Andrew was unable to make the shot."

This could be the start of quite a rivalry. Next year, Butler joins the new Big East with Marquette.

Stevens' Bulldogs reached the championship game in 2010 and '11, but won't make the second weekend this year.

"You can control some things, you can't control others," Stevens said. "We're going to go back and wish we controlled a few things little bit better. ... We talk about all the close wins ... but the only commercial I ever see is a close loss, Butler vs. Duke (in the 2010 championship).

"We've been here before, we've lived it. And we'll move on."

Blue shot 9 of 15 from the field with three from long range, finishing just four points off his career high. Trent Lockett and Wilson each added 13 points for Marquette, which shot 23 of 54 (43 percent) and was 5 of 12 from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs' defense also held Clarke to just six second-half points after he seemed ready to dominate the game by himself. Smith finished with 17 points.

'Blackboard Wars' Season Finale: Art Saves Homeless Teen Allen Lefort's Life (VIDEO)

Eighteen-year-old John McDonogh High School student Allen Lefort ended up homeless after a series of struggles -- his father's overdose and his brother's death among them. In this clip from the season finale of "Blackboard Wars," Lefort, after a suicide attempt and an intervention from school principal Dr. Marvin Thompson, opens up about how art has saved him.

"I got into art by my older brother, but he died... and I just took up on what he was doing," explains Lefort in the clip. "When I do art, it comes from my mind just free. Mellow. It's like I go into another world."

As to art and the effect it will have on his future, Lefort has this to say: "This is more than a dream; this is my life right here. This is my way out."

The season finale of "Blackboard Wars" airs Saturday, March 23, at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

Goblin-proof chicken book wins odd-title prize

LONDON (AP) ? A supernaturally tinged barnyard manual has won Britain's quirkiest literary award, the Diagram Prize for year's oddest book title.

"Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop" by Reginald Bakeley was awarded the prize Friday by trade magazine The Bookseller.

The book took 38 percent of the votes in a public ballot, beating finalists including "How Tea Cosies Changed the World," ''Was Hitler Ill?" and "God's Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis."

"Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop" is subtitled "and other practical advice in our campaign against the fairy kingdom." It is described by its Massachusetts-based publisher, Conari Press, as "the essential primer for banishing the dark fairy creatures that are lurking in the dark corners and crevices of your life."

Diagram Prize overseer Horace Bent said it was no coincidence "in these austere times that a book aimed to assist members of the public frugally farming their own produce proved the most popular title."

The book's editor, Clint Marsh, said he and the author were honored to receive a prize that "celebrates the playfulness that is at the heart of much of the world's best book publishing."

"Reginald and I take this as a clear sign that people have had enough of goblins in their chicken coops," he said. "Our campaign against the fairy kingdom continues."

The prize was founded in 1978. Its rules say the books must be serious and their titles not merely a gimmick.

Previous winners of the quirky prize include "Bombproof Your Horse," ''Living With Crazy Buttocks" and "Managing a Dental Practice: The Genghis Khan Way."

PepsiCo says it's not hungry for a big snack deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? PepsiCo Inc. says it isn't interested in any big acquisitions after a report suggested a mega-snack food deal could bring its Doritos under the same roof as Oreos.

The Purchase, N.Y., company, which owns Frito-Lay, Quaker Oats and Gatorade, issued a short statement Friday after the Telegraph of London said activist investor Nelson Peltz could push it to merge with Mondelez International Inc., which makes Cadbury and other Nabisco brands, in addition to the famous cream-filled cookies.

The report cited unnamed sources saying Peltz, who is known for making big investments then forcing change, has been building stakes in the two companies in recent weeks.

PepsiCo has long been the subject of speculation that it would spin off its underperforming beverage business. CEO Indra Nooyi tried to squash such talks last year with a "Power of One" marketing campaign that featured the company's sodas alongside its chips. But PepsiCo has nevertheless been reviewing options to restructure its North American beverage business and recently said it would provide more thoughts on the matter early next year.

In particular, the company said it wanted to see how a new sweetener system it's developing might help improve its soda business.

"We certainly wouldn't want to make a change in the business structure while there's still opportunities to unlock value that might be better unlocked while PepsiCo still owns the business," Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston said in a call with reporters in February.

Consumer Edge Research CEO Bill Pecoriello noted that the global snack business is much more attractive to PepsiCo than the soda business, which has been declining for years in developed markets such as the U.S.

But if PepsiCo were to spin off its beverage business, he said it would likely want to make a major acquisition to remain as big as it is today.

In fact, Consumer Edge issued a report just this week detailing how a merged PepsiCo and Mondelez would work in markets around the world. The report found that the combined company would benefit because there are many regions where one of the companies has a big presence and the other doesn't.

In places such as the U.S. where both do big business, Pecoriello said consolidating distribution networks could result in $3.4 billion in cost savings. He also noted that PepsiCo spinning off its beverage business wouldn't necessarily negate the "Power of One" strategy because independent companies could maintain marketing partnerships. For instance, PepsiCo still provides beverages for the fast-food chains owned by Yum Brands Inc., which it spun off in 1997.

Still, the deal would present plenty of challenges.

JP Morgan analyst Ken Goldman noted that Mondelez has an array of products that could be too complicated "to appeal to a larger suitor." He also noted that the size of the company could raise antitrust issues.

At the same time, Goldman said he wouldn't take any potential interest by Peltz lightly.

In a short statement, PepsiCo said that it doesn't comment on market rumor or speculation.

"As we've said before, we are making strong progress in our strategy to deliver long-term growth and create shareholder value," it said.

Mondelez International Inc., which split from Kraft Foods Group Inc. last year, also said it was satisfied with its portfolio as it stands.

A representative for Peltz's Trian Fund Management declined to comment.

Newer SLAP tear surgery gives military personnel hope for return to active duty

CHICAGO, IL Research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in Chicago, IL shows that biceps tenodesis surgery is safe and effective for individuals who suffer a SLAP (superior labral anterior posterior) tear of the shoulder. Patients examined had previously undergone unsuccessful arthroscopic repair for their injuries.

"Our research focused on a sample of 42 active-duty men and women who were unable to return to duty after primary arthroscopic SLAP repair," said Frank McCormick, MD, and CDR Matthew T. Provencher, MD, MC, USN, lead authors of the study, from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. "After performing the more traditional biceps tenodesis surgery, (81%) of patients returned to pre-injury level of activity and were able to return to active duty."

None of the patients in the study reported a failure after their secondary, revision surgery and all reported significant improvement in their shoulder range of motion, from a mean of 142 degrees of abduction to 165 degrees at final follow-up. The patients had initially demonstrated an inability to lift, perform push-ups and do overhead activities after their failed primary surgeries.

"While our research focused on military personnel, we believe acknowledging their return to full activity serves as a suitable comparison to a traditional, active population," noted Provencher. "This provides important information about handling a failed SLAP repair and provides an example of new treatment courses for others in the future."

Biceps tenodesis treatment involves relocating the biceps tendon to alleviate pain and dysfunction as well as prevent tears from forming in the shoulder tissue.
