Earlier this week I attended a local business to business networking event sponsored by Rick Gosser of Gosser Corporate Sales. He was celebrating his business anniversary by bringing in some of his vendors to showcase their promotional products. I went with another local small business owner, Paul Kennedy. to support Rick first because this was not about me, but about him and his local small business success.
During this business to business networking event I met several other small business owners including Angela Ramos of Inspiration Fitness and Dan Rosenberger. Angela had an open house the previous week to celebrate the relocation of her business to a larger facility.? Rick was in attendance there to support her.? Sales Training Coaching Tip:? Business to business networking is essential for small businesses provided there is clarity and intent behind the actions.
Personally I am quite tired of so many small business owners engaged in the ?poor me sales syndrome.? These are the folks constantly complaining about their inability to increase sales. Possibly if they had a more giving attitude or what my friend Dan Waldschmit calls a giving mindset they would achieve their goal to increase sales?? And in many cases, I never observe these same small business owners supporting other small business owners or sales professionals unless there is some ?quid pro quo? involved.
Last year around the Christmas buying season, ?buy local? became a mantra for many small businesses. This attitude and more importantly behaviors of ?buy local? appeared to have died just as quickly as the holiday mantra of? ?Peace and Good Will.?
Now some who read this post may have as what my husband calls ?tight shorts.?? They may be thinking, I hardly have time to market my own business, attend to my own sales, do what I need to do less alone support others.? These folks are so infected with the ?poor me sales syndrome? it is oozing out from every pore in their bodies.
Get over it!
With so many small business owners engaged in content marketing which is really education based marketing, they are sharing their content under the auspices of this ?poor me sales syndrome.?? These folks are truly clueless about what makes a great blog content as Martha Griffin recently posted.
The ability to increase sales is directly connected with the ability to:
- Think of others first
- Take focused and directed action
- Be authentic
Now some may ask why call attention to this ?poor me sales syndrome??? Focus on being positive, ignore these folks may be their responses.? That advice is very good.
However, with so much emphasis on sales training coaching with the inability to increase sales being experienced by many small business owners to sales professionals, ignoring the ?poor me sales syndrome? is much like the childhood story of the Emperor?s New Clothes.? By calling attention to this malady, this infection may awaken a few of those clueless individuals with one of those ?Ah, ha moments, I could have had a V-8!?? Ignoring this anti business building attitude will only allow it to continue to be spread throughout the land in my humble opinion.

However, in usability, as a list-making application, it fails miserably. Clear clearly has no regard for what people actually do with mobile organization apps. Clear attempted, admirably, to simplify list making to the same extreme that Twitter sought to simplify communication, with character restrictions, limited functionality, tight features, but most of all, utter simplicity. Twitter has managed to pull this off, but Clear has not. There is precisely one type of person who should spend 99 cents on this app, and that is an iPhone app developer who surely could learn much from Clear's thoughtful interactive design.
Feature Failure
A good to-do list app requires, at the least, due dates and the ability to add notes. Those are characteristics you can easily find in any list making app, from Remember the Milk, to Awesome Note + Todo , to Weave. They're even in iOS 5's own free and included Reminders app. Beyond that core functionality, to-do lists can and should vary to meet the needs of different people. Reminders includes a geolocation function so that you can remind yourself to do something when you're in a particular place, like pick up your dry cleaning when you're in the same shopping plaza as your dry cleaner. Weave's niche is that it builds in the ability to manage to-do in terms of projects rather than single events. Remember the Milk and Reminders work with Siri on iPhone 4S. Some apps synchronize with other tools you might use like a Google Calendar or Evernote, but the point is they offer some features that cater to different kinds of users.
The problem with Clear is that it caters to no one, save those dazzled by interactive design with little substance behind it, because it has no features. The little functionality it does offer is so simplified you cannot do anything with it.
The name of any to-do item is limited to 28 characters. If you type more than 28 characters, the iPhone dings and vibrates, the app's way of hollering "Limit exceeded!" As much as I tried to work within these restrictions, my normal daily tasks simply cannot be described with accuracy in accurate in that limited space. I could shorthanded it if the item further opened to a notes field, but it doesn't. Twenty-eight characters is all you get. It is not enough for me, and I cannot imagine anyone else whose to-do lists are so simple that this app would benefit him or her in any way.
Design Genius
No one can reasonably argue that clear is ugly, backward, or unusable. Just the opposite: Clear's designers could win awards handily for the skill with which its interface was crafted. In terms of design, it is on par with Flipboard , an iPad app that wowed users for leveraging the tablet's touch capabilities. When ported to the iPhone, Flipboard remarkably lived up to its well-earned reputation despite the smaller screen. Both Flipboard and Clear are apps you want to touch. Play with them for even a few seconds, and they draw you in.
Upon installing Clear and launching it for the first time, the user is walked through the app via a series of tutorial screens that in themselves speak to the app's conscientious design choices. You're persuaded to try swiping, dragging, pinching, and tapping the screen before you know it. By the time you reach the actual app, there's no question how to use it.
What's so creative about the design? For starters there are no buttons to speak of, no navigation menu, no settings icons, not even a share button. You interact with the app exclusively through finger gestures. Swipe long to switch between different lists and the menu. Create a to-do item in one of three ways: pull down gently from above an existing list, tap gently below a list, or use two fingers to pull apart the two items between which you want to insert a new one.
Color demarcates priority. In the default theme, heat map, red is at the top to show the highest priority items while successive shades of orange and yellow trickle down to indicate less importance. Other themes, available in a settings menu that you can access through a couple of long swipes, use the same principle but with different colors.
Clearly Not

World Bank sets plan to pick Zoellick's successor
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The World Bank plans to select its next president by the time of its spring meetings in late April, it announced Friday.
The bank's 25-member executive board said it will accept nominations until March 23.
The board said it will choose up to three candidates to interview. It wants to finalize its selection by the time of the April 20-22 meetings of the World Bank and its sister lending organization, the International Monetary Fund.
Robert Zoellick, the current World Bank president, announced Thursday that he will step down when his five-year term ends June 30.
Since the IMF and the World Bank were created, the top IMF job has always gone to a European, and the World Bank post has gone to an American.
But China, now the world's second-largest economy, and other emerging economic powers such as Brazil and India have argued that they, too, deserve consideration for the leadership of the two organizations.
The IMF and World Bank have adopted new selection guidelines aimed at ensuring a more open process. But in June, when the IMF chose a new leader, it selected another European, Christine Lagarde.
Lagarde, then the French finance minister, was chosen after Dominique Strauss-Kahn abruptly stepped down from the IMF after being charged with attempted rape. The charges were later dropped.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday that the Obama administration would put forward a candidate for the World Bank post. But he didn't say whether the administration would consider promoting a non-American. Geithner said the United States wanted the World Bank's board to engage in an "open and expeditious" process.
Two Americans who have been mentioned for the post are Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Clinton's spokeswoman said Thursday that Clinton isn't interested in the job.

Scientists working to build a better leaf
Researchers are analyzing the molecular pathways that plants use for photosynthesis.

Researchers have been trying for decades to improve upon Mother Nature's favorite solar-power trick?? photosynthesis ? but now they finally think they see the sunlight at the end of the tunnel.
"We now understand photosynthesis much better than we did 20 years ago," said Richard Cogdell, a botanist at the University of Glasgow who has been doing research on bacterial photosynthesis for more than 30 years. He and three colleagues discussed their efforts to tweak the process that powers the world's plant life today in Vancouver, Canada, during the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The researchers are taking different approaches to the challenge, but what they have in common is their search for ways to get something extra out of the biochemical process that uses sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen. "You can really view photosynthesis as an assembly line with about 168 steps," said Steve Long, head of the University of Illinois' Photosynthesis and Atmospheric Change Laboratory.
Revving up Rubisco
Howard Griffiths, a plant physiologist at the University of Cambridge, just wants to make improvements in one section of that assembly line. His research focuses on ways to get more power out of the part of the process driven by an enzyme called Rubisco. He said he's trying to do what many auto mechanics have done to make their engines run more efficiently: "You turbocharge it."
Some plants, such as sugar cane and corn, already have a turbocharged Rubisco engine, thanks to a molecular pathway known as C4. Geneticists believe the C4 pathway started playing a significant role in plant physiology in just the past 10 million years or so. Now Griffiths is looking into strategies to add the C4 turbocharger to rice, which ranks among the world's most widely planted staple crops.
The new cellular machinery might be packaged in a micro-compartment that operates within the plant cell. That's the way biochemical turbochargers work in algae and cyanobacteria. Griffiths and his colleagues are looking at ways to create similar micro-compartments for higher plants. The payoff would come in the form of more efficient carbon dioxide conversion, with higher crop productivity as a result. "For a given amount of carbon gain, the plant uses less water," Griffiths said.
Making the grid more efficient
Anne K. Jones, a biochemist at Arizona State University, wants to make use of the power that goes to waste during photosynthesis. On a sunny day, a plant's molecular machinery generates more electrons than the Rubisco carbohydrate-producing engine can handle. "A lot of those electrons get thrown away," she said.
In this sense, photosynthesis is like "a badly connected electrical grid," Jones said. She's studying ways to use biological nanowires to transfer the extra energy from the light-harvesting cell into another cell that's genetically engineered to produce fuel or food. The nanowires would be analogous to electrical transmission lines, distributing power from one part of the grid to another.
Jones said filaments found on the surface of many bacterial species, known as pili, could be adapted for this purpose. Other researchers have already been looking into using those filaments as the basis for bioelectronic circuits.
"Components in future systems need not even be biological, so long as they interface with the wires developed in this project, paving the way for hybrid biological/inorganic photosynthetic systems," Jones explained in an abstract for her presentation.
Creating an artificial leaf
Jones' research meshes with Cogdell's efforts to adapt the chemistry of photosynthesis ujsing synthetic biology. Cogdell's project, backed by Britain's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, is aimed at developing an artificial leaf that produces a dense, portable fuel you could put in your car.
"We would aim to produce hydrocarbon fuel from carbon dioxide," he said. His favorite candidate is terpene, the main ingredient in the plant resins that are today distilled into turpentine. Under the right conditions, terpene behaves "rather like octane," Cogdell said.
He envisions a process in which carbon dioxide and water are chemically processed to produce a scummy sheen of terpene, which could be skimmed off and turned into fuel. Even though the end product is a hydrocarbon, the process would be carbon-neutral because of the CO2 capture, Cogdell said.
"We can't do it yet, but we have a dream," he told me.
Whether the future belongs to artificial leaves, or nanowired bacteria, or turbocharged rice, all these researchers believe that coming up with a better way to turn sunlight into energy is a crucial challenge for the next generation. They estimated that there was only a 30- to 50-year window for completing the transition from the fossil-fuel era to the age of total renewable energy.
Griffiths said the next generation will need more food as well as more fuel. He referred to the "green revolution" that has transformed global agriculture over the past half-century, and added that "what we now need is a new green revolution for the next 50 years."
Cogdell echoed that view: "This is one of the grand challenges that mankind faces," he said.

?The purpose of the programme really is to pose the question: how serious is gun crime? Is it better or worse than it was before? How is it impact on people?s lives? How is it impact on society? And what can be done to stop these crimes happening or at least control it?? he said.
The programme also features an interview with a man who is described as a well-known drug dealer and who has direct experience of Irish gun crime.
Mr Tiernan says that while drug dealers are notorious for their reluctance to talk to the media, this drug dealer (who appears wearing a balaclava) was willing to be filmed.
?This particular drug dealer felt so strongly about the shooting of Melanie in Tallaght that he actually felt that things had gone too far, so that?s what led him to do the interview,? he said.
The programme will feature interviews with politicians, journalists, academics and people who have lost partners and relatives to gun crime. There will also be a live studio debate on the topic.
?There?s a lot of ignorance about gun crime. People don?t know much about it because most people live happy lives and don?t come into contact with guns, so one of the central purposes of this programme is to inform people about it,? said Mr Tiernan.
?We?re looking at the illegitimate trade in weapons and its human cost, but we?re also looking at the legitimate side of the gun trade in Ireland which I definitely think is something people don?t know much about,? he added.

Their first stop was the Central Minnesota Wellness Expo, held at the River?s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud , with over 50 exhibitors and 30 speakers participating. The first annual exposition was free to the public and held to promote health, fitness and general wellness?in the community.
Students divided into two teams at the MSB booth. The first team distributed handouts on germs and educated the attendees on?their daily habits. They also demonstrated correct handwashing techniques. The second team gave?volunteer attendees free blood pressure checks and presented literature on normal/low/high blood pressure results. ?They also discussed treatments for unhealthy blood pressure.
The students were encoraged that most passers-by were ?open and willing? to participate in their activities. Their goal for the day for blood pressure checks was 50 and they took 104.
In addition to their service learning project objective, the students networked with surrounding vendors and one student, Stacy Roush, even found a potential job lead.? The students also promoted an upcoming Health and Wellness Showcase at the MSB-St. Cloud campus by handing out flyers.
MSB instructors joined in the Wellness Expo as well. Massage Chair, Irene Rangen, presented on stage ?The Top 10 Reasons Not to Get a Massage,? (which actually?convinces people to get a massage) and Health and Fitness Chair Scott Eide gave a kettle bell demonstration. Medical Assiting Chair Lisa Smith, Health Management Chair Deb Berglund and?Medical Assisting instructor Robyn Lauermann also?helped at the booth.?Director of Admissions, Kim Plombon, kept the attendees engaged and active.
The Medical Assisting students had such a positive experience, they want to connect with other community partners and continue to take their service learning project farther down the road, educating as many people as possible.

What would a music awards ceremony be without the fun presence of Taylor Swift?
At the 2012 Grammys, this fan favorite picked up a pair of trophies - for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance - and then took a banjo on stage to prove they were deserved, belting out a version of the award-winning track, "Mean."
