PACIFIC, Wash. -- Mayor Cy Sun walked out of a city council meeting Monday night, angering residents who had showed up to discuss the staffing shortage in the police department.
Currently there are only four police officers in the city of Pacific, although council members say there is room in the budget for six.
According to statistics from Pacific police, person and property crimes in the town of 6,000 doubled in 2012 compared to 2011. Overtime hours logged by the police officers more than doubled during the same time.
At the beginning of the meeting, Sun became angry after the council informed him they were removing several items he had placed on the agenda. Just minutes into the meeting he announced he was leaving.
"I'm not going to sit here and be a dunce," Sun said.
Some citizens followed him out of the meeting telling him he had a responsibility to listen to their concerns.
"You need to be our mayor," one woman said.
Mayor Sun told KING?5 that the safety concerns regarding the police department are exaggerated.
"They are not overworked and the people are protected," he said.
